Good on ya, your best chioce would be the red fin as they stay smaller and elephant ears are much more expensive and rarer.
Thing is, I can't seem to find any Giant Gourami here right now - except for the albino tattooed ones (YUK!).

Must call all the LFS around the country and check...

I was thinking about the Red snakehead sorry.
Ah ok :) Phheeew! A 3 feet monster in my 50 gal! :nilly:

George took a while to locate, at the time we couldn't find any ggs at all, and then to find the rarest one was a bit of luck.

Lou, great shout on the vets for Gussy.

Matt,
As for water changes, get a cheap nitrate testing kit should cost no more than £5 for the tablet ones, and keep note of the levels/water changes done. It'll help you get a better idea of what is happening.
As for the filters, what type are you using? If its biological you could be doing more harm than good cleaning them monthly

We do about 45-60 litres every other day , or halve that daily. Thats 8-16 us Gal, I think

caught it in one of my fishing trip...real beauty :)
Ah, such a nice one! :) Size of tank, tank mates and filtration please?

Saw that you are keeping it with a snake head... a micropeltes, it seems... any aggression issues?

It was indeed a sweet bit of luck, my friend. :)

Please let us know the outcome of your efforts in getting the medication - some vets will have medication for big fish...

Guys, it's such a pity that testing kits are totally unavailable here... we all rely on massive filtration and water changes to ensure that we keep the water clean... yet there is no actual proof that the water is indeed clean except by judging the apparent health of the fish. I remember one LFS brought a few kits from China once... the price was so hot that it sold only a couple... phheww! :(

Matt, please tell us about your filtration. :)

Lou, Pm me your address and I can work out how much it would cost to send them out to you if you want, never posted to, let alone been to Mauritius so would have no idea how much it would cost. We could use paypal or something???
Seems strange that I could go anywhere and get a nitrate testing kit and you have no option, big world I guess

khorxianjin, cheaper to catch that to buy ;-) looks like its a bit of a moody fish, bit like George!!

The filter is a Rena Filstar XP3

Maybe this link will work: http://www.marsfishcare.co.uk/en_us/

When I clean it I use hot water on everything but the Bio-Chem Stars, which the instructions says is the biological filtration part of the system.

If I swap out 3 gallons of water every morning, that'll be 21 gallons a week, or 28% per week. I'm guessing that'll work great, especially seeing as how it's been 2 quarts a day for about a year now.

How amusing: I just pulled out the filter box to check the model number and discovered a surprise- a PH kit that Gussy's old owner threw into the box and I never noticed before. Running the test gave me a PH of 7.5

sorry to be a pain but me and bogwoodbruce are in the uk, please specify us or uk gallon....google is your best bet has an auto calc.....

When doing bio filter cleaning make sure you do it in waste tank water or you could kill the friendly bacteria that eats the waste
PH is not that important, trust me I have discus tank as well... very hardy fish
