GIANT gouramis

Ok I got this fish the other day. First time I ever owned a gouramis.

By far the weirdest fish Ive ever owned. I bought him used I think hes a couple years old. I put him in the tank just last night and he will stare at me anytime I come near the tank. When i leave he sulks and when he sees my wife he gets really pissed and starts tearing the tank up. He scares the crap out of my silver who is 2x as big as him just by looking at him. He comes up and sips on some air every 5 minutes or so.

Anyway hes in my 270 gal and seems very happy. Hes about 13" long and his name is BIG EARN McCRACKEN.

I know very little about him and im just posting up here to see. Feel free to add suggestions or whatever you want. Thanks for the help!!!

1) what kind of GG he is?
2) male or female?
3) how much bigger is he going to get?
4) He doesnt seem to want to eat to much, which suprises me. Iv tried algae wafers, hikiri sticks, pellets and some other stuff. He just seems to grind most of it up and spit it out. What should I try. veggies?

1)Looks to be a pink Osphronemus gorami, which is just a color variation of the common grey.
2)Judging by the pointed anal/dorsal fins, i would guess it is male.
3) O. gorami can grow to 27" or more.
4) Try crickets, most GG's can resist them. They have their own tastes, you can try a variety of different fruits and veggies to see what he likes.(be sure to remove any uneaten fruits and veggies as they can grow mold in your tank and actually cover your fish in a matter of hours.)
BTW....thats a beautiful tank and fish...
Hope this helps, good luck with him...

Dion....

PS...."I bought him used"...never hear that term when refering to an animal.... I did buy a bearded dragon from a lfs, the sign said "scratch and dent sale"....she was missing a piece of her tail...:D

Hey thanks for the help Dion. Ill try putting him on some crickets tommorow. He is now eating pellets and food sticks. He killed my 8" frontosa the other night. I knew he was going to do it, he kept bashing him into the corner of the tank. I dont know why he just absolutly hated that fish from the moment I put him in. So weird. It didnt bother me to much, I think the Frontosa was developing a spine problem or something cause he was growing all crooked. So when he died I didnt get to bent out of shape.

There are other smaller more timid fish the gouramis pays no attention to.

One thing I dont get is that if he is a true pink Osphronemus gorami why would he have only grown to 13" in 2 years? Wouldnt he be bigger by now?

Its all in the genes. GG's tend to grow in spurts and just because they can reach 27" or more doesnt mean they will. Give him some time and lots of food. 13" in 2 years is pretty good IMO, my big guy is about 27" @ 7 years.

Seriously I'd have some really good info to post if Dion didn't get there first, too busty gaming...

Agreed with the above... spot on

Hi guys/ladys

I have been reading through the GG sticky thread ( lots of good info in here ) and i decided to post picks of my new 220 gal GG tank. Its 3 weeks set up as of today. I have had the 2 GG since sept. 15,2010

2 GG 11" & 6"
1 Pleco 7"
4 Bloody Parrots 2" to 3"
7 Clown Loaches: 1" to 4"
2 Bichir (1 is albino ) 5" to 6"
1 Upside down Catfish 4"

Never have the GG been agresive to the other fish, but the big GG does bully the smaller one a bit, and gets his fins damaged in the procces. I will post more close ups in my next post in just a few minutes.

Here is a pic of my big guy, you can see the damaged fin.

i know the 3 small ones were dyed, but my wife liked them.
They seem to be doing very well, and i am happy to say are starting to loose the dye and revert back to thier true color. At least they were not tattooed
