I just looked through the first 10 pages or so and can't believe the amount of negativity towards acrylic. But then I realized that they were mainly from the same couple of guys who either had a bad experience or never even owned an acrylic.
Here is my opinion...
I have had galss all my life and have stop keeping fish for some time. I decided to get back into it and purchased a 75g tank. I had no idea what maerial it was and didn't even think about it. weeks later I decided to buy another 75g tank. I have them side by side and OMG what a difference! One of them is glass for sure the other must be acrylic because it isn't glass and is much thinner.
Difference...
The acrylic is 100 times more beautiful! The glass had a very noticable green tint to it while the acrylic was crystal clear. Also, the glass has so much reflection it's not even funny while I can barely see any reflections in the acrylic. It's Like comparing a LCD television to one of those old tube TVs.
Glass lovers keep mentioning how easy it is to scratch acrylic and make it sound like what a pair of skates will do to ice. I've bumped into my tank a few times and even used algae magnets for glass only on my acrylic tank and have yet to see a single scratch.
Let's face it, the aquarium is meant to be viewed like your television, so treat it like that. It is for viewing pleasure. If you are so paranoid with scratches why not get a pond?
Let's assume...
1. acrylic is more beautiful than glass.
2. acrylic scratches more easily than glass
3. acrylic is much lighter than glass
4. acrylic is more expensice than glass
5. acrylic can come in larger sizes than glass
Now, replace the word acrylic with LCD TVs and glass with OLD TUBE TVs, you get...
1. LCD TVs is more beautiful than OLD TUBE TVs.
2. LCD TVs scratches more easily than OLD TUBE TVs
3. LCD TVs is much lighter than OLD TUBE TVs
4. LCD TVs is more expensice than OLD TUBE TVs
5. LCD TVs can come in larger sizes than OLD TUBE TVs
Now, which would you rather have?
Before anyone starts to say that a glass tank looks better than an all scratched up acrylic tank, make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Acrylic tanks don't get all scratched badly unless they are abused. You can easily find a really badly scratched up old glass tank. And acrylic can be buffed out (I believe I saw a thread with someone buffing it out) but you can't buff out a glass tank. And the comments about the acrylic turning yellow over time? Has anyone even seen it? If there is I imagine that it's a very old acrylic and I'm sure they have fixed that problem with any new acrylic tanks on the market today.
Conclusion...
I believe what I see and don't what I only hear. I will take the LCD TV any day.
