I wanted to get a 300+ gal tank for my 9 fullsize paranas. i seen Glass Cages had nice deals but i dont know if its a good buy. To bad no places in town sell a 300gal tank. How much would this be empty if i needed to move it? filled im guessing 1.5Tons. Where did you guys get your tanks?

Man this reminds me of this one time when I went to college in Providence, RI.

I always knew that acryllic scratches easily, due to the fact that I use to own an acryllic device (I would rather not discuss its' use over here, but that it held water in it also) and it always scratched when I had to clean it. Even on a normal sponge, the rough side will produce very slight scratches. Thats why I usually prefer glass.

So anyways, my roomates decided that they wanted to have fish tanks, so i decided to tag along and see what was up. One kid was looking at tanks and he picks out an acryllic one, and I tell him that its gonna scratch so damn easily. He didnt listen to me. Well initially I wasnt going to get something but once I saw some small-aquarium-sized catfish, I couldnt hold myself back. Anyways I got myself a glass tank and you could compare the wear to the tanks as soon as we got back to our dorm room. by the 2nd month i had 2 small scratches on my tank but the kid's tank was scratched as hell. And most of it was done by his own fish.

So yeah, glass over acryllic any day.

Acrylic scratches MUCH more easily than glass… but with acrylic you can buff scratches out, glass you cannot…

Acrylic is MUCH lighter than glass…

Glass is MUCH cheaper than acrylic…

Acrylic is stronger… but glass is strong enough so I don’t get why stronger is an advantage, but it definitely isn’t a disadvantage…

As glass gets thicker it has a bit of a green tint to it… but it also looks ‘crisper’…

In my opinion, both materials have pros and both materials have cons… in some situations acrylic may be ‘better’ and in some situations glass may be better…

All of my tanks are glass… and I like it better that way…

PS - Foophy… stop foophing around… :p

Acrylic...

But the difference of application can make a world of difference...

Public Aquariums often have "tanks" that are 10+ feet deep... therefore the pressure at the bottom of this is many many times greater than anything we would have in our little 2.5' deep tanks...

Public aquariums often have huge arches in their "tanks" and acrylic is far easier to bend than glass.

Due to the vast depths public aquariums generally have, the walls must be quite thick. Acrylic is lighter than glass...

We must acknowledge these differences in application. When they made their choice they were considering an entire different set of details than we consider in home aquaria... Details can make all the difference...
