so are you shooting this in full manual? what were your settings (ISO, shutter speed, aperture) etc. and i usually get lucky with my speedlight as to where it casts a black background.

have you figured out the correct angle at which to aim at the fish? :)
if u are using an over head, i think any angle is pretty much a correct angle, unless you are using a large aperture causing a smaller area of focus then you might have to keep changing the angles till u find the best(scheimpflug principl).

For the black background just use a small aperture(f15-16), high iso(mine supports the lowest 200 so i use 200), and 1/1000 for the shutter speed, with an over head flash and u shall get the black background every time like a charm :)

thanks for the tip :) ill have to give that a try. my settings are usually close to that, except i like to keep that ISO at 200 which means a shutter speed of 1/250 or slower...

Pics look great. maybe I should save up to get one of these speedlites. Everyone else seems to have one and has better shots:irked:

Full manual mode, 18-55mm lens, ISO 200, shutter speed for the RD/Midas shot was 1/250th and the rest were @1/200th, F-stop@ f/11 for all of these shots, full auto white balance, auto focus set on evaluative metering, image stabilizer active.
I still left the tank lights on and positioned speedlite about 10" from the front of the tank facing straight down. The speedlite zoom function was set @ 14mm and I used the factory diffuser on the flash to broaden the flash.

I highly recommend it. I have snapped better pics in the last week than I have in the past 2 yrs without a speedlite.:D

I love them all. But the Bocourti shot is stunning. I have never seen their color captured so well.

thanks! sounds identical to my settings, minus the diffuser. i just picked one of those up so ill give that a try. i usually use my flash at a higher zoom level since my tank is 36" tall.

keep up the great work
