Nice thread, love being able to see progress growth im planing on making and diy just for one of these fish my self so this is awesome me just wondering what fish are compatible with these guys also ill be starting my build next month and im down to compare notes, although im still sorting out the details for mine while im offshore so i have a plan to execute when i get back home anyways awesome thread man
Haha my pleasure.

For compatible fish any large, non-aggressive current loving fish would do fine. Tarpon, mahseers, payaras and barbs and the like. Juruense and tigrinus catfish mix wonderfully as well. If your tank is big enough that you can have some slack current at the surface, arowanas work wonderfully, too.

Really the hard part isn't finding fish that can survive with GATF, the trick is finding fish that won't stress, bully or out compete the GATF. GATFs tend to be sissies, especially when small. Its always best to establish any ATF first and then try to add tankmates.

Go here for a lot of good reading on caring for ATF!

go with extra length and less height.... seeing my guys go from the 6 ft to 10 foot tank has made a world of difference in their growth and overall health and behavior.... my dream tank (realistically) would be 12x4-5x3-4 length width and height

+1. The fish would very much prefer the longer, lower tank. They don't need that much depth.

Awesome thread. Good looking fish.
Thanks man!

I need a proper macro lens. This was taken with a 50mm f1.8G Nikkor. Its wonderful for whole-body shots but it is somewhat lacking at closeups. :/

Settings were f8 ISO 640 1/200th shutter.

Well Max has been acting a bit off the past few days. He's been extremely jumpy, he's spent a lot of time swimming into the glass and he won't eat. I can't figure out what is causing his behavior. I've added dithers back to the tank in the form of Drogo and a pair of silver dollars and my water is perfect. I first figured he was flighty because I sold everyone else from the tank but that didn't fix it. I then figured that maybe when I was gone for two weeks the water went to hell, but according to my API Freshwater Master Test Kit, I'm 7.8-0-0-10. The ten in nitrate is explained by a big pothos colony living in a HOB.

The only other thing I figure might be causing his odd behavior is that he's getting ready to cut fresh teeth, as this is a normal behavior pattern before he cuts teeth. The issue I have with this is that he normally cuts teeth every 2-3 months and its only been a month since hes cut teeth last. The behavior pattern fits, except he's been doing it for a week now and normal tooth cutting behavior only lasts 2-3 days.

On the good side however, his dark colors seem to be continuing to develop. The rays in his fins are now clearly black and his dark coloration is hanging on. Looks like sashimimaster might be on to something when he said his GATF looked different. His fish has black rays, too and is morphologically very similar to mine. Could "black" goliaths have been hiding under our noses all this time? Is there something we're missing from our water that causes the color not to develop?

Fascinating.

Anyhoo, here's a pic of Max from tonight uploaded straight off of the memory card. I didn't even resize it. Note the black fins and how rough his chin looks from his recent odd behavior.

I sold my gatfs dithers and he's been acting up a lot just like your not eating acting jumpy rubbing up on the glass mine isn't shedding teeth my water is perfect everything is the same except the two tin foils are gone I don't know what it is but maybe it's the loss of a common face or friend to the fish maybe

Never did update on all of that, did I?

After a couple of days of the arowana being in the tank with him, he was back to normal. He did this wierd thing for a few days where he wouldn't eat if he thought I was watching, but now he's completely settled down to normal. He actually snarfed three Hikari Jumbo Carnisticks in one mouthful before I went to work last night and ate about 15 in total.

He's back to his normal self now, he swims happily into the current all day and stays in a slack area just under the surface with the arowana all night long just like he used to.

Moral of the story? A GATF needs a big, calm dither to be happy. :)
