A small update on the babies...

The FATF is doing very well. For the past three days or so, he's been tagging carnisticks like he wants to eat them, but he won't actually do it. Today, it became fairly obvious that he was shedding teeth, so that makes sense. He's about two days past schedule for taking his first pellet but since she's shedding teeth at least I know why.

The maybe-brevis on the other hand isn't doing so hot. That severely emaciated little fellow decided to stop eating. I wasn't able to figure out why. Out of desperation set up a hospital tank for him with very little current and no light in hopes that he would do a little better. Sure enough, he managed to eat a few bloodworms tonight, enough that he has a little belly bump. He seems to have perked up a bit since he's eaten. That's a good thing, because he's got fifteen gutloaded zebra danios living in the tank with him. Hopefully if he keeps eating the bloodworms and building energy, he'll be able to tag a danio soon. If he starts taking them, I think he might have a chance of recovering! If he doesn't though, I feel that his prognosis isn't very bright.

EDIT:

So I just had a close call. After I posted this picture, I vacuumed the tank to get the poop from the danios off of the bottom. The maybe-brevis went into shock so bad because of this that it completely stopped breathing. I had to hold it in the current of the filter for over an hour before it was strong enough to stay upright and swim on its own.

This experience really drove home for me just how delicate this fish is. Time to go watch that hospital tank like a hawk now, the maybe-brevis isn't out of the woods yet.

Just came in from mowing the lawn to find the brevis stuck to the filter intake. It was still breathing when I let it go into the tank, but couldn't really control its swimming anymore. I have to leave for work in like an hour, and I work 24 hour shifts. I don't expect this fish to be alive when I come home.

I've done absolutely everything anyone can do to save a fish and it hasn't worked. If this fish dies, I'm going to ask for remuneration from the seller who sold it to me. As I have said before, I NEVER would have bought this fish if I had known its actual condition. By all rights, this fish probably should have been dead days ago.

Very unfortunate ... agreed that the fish should never have been sold in that condition ... hopefully you can get a refund and find another brevis, although I dont want to count this one out yet ... got my fingers crossed for ya ....

I agree. I'm VERY unhappy about this. I hope the seller and I can find an agreeable situation for this now that its died.

Meh, I've been better. Between crappy days at work, this fish dying and a growing but intangible dissatisfaction that I'm experiencing, I've been grouchy lately. I've been spending some time in the woods to try to make things better for myself. I think I have a handle on my problem, but it's sort of complicated and there's no need to get into it here. Let's just say I forgot how much of a country boy I really am.

As for the fish, I've actually tracked down another brevis and another forskahlii, but they're only available as a pair. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger. :)

That's a bummer....

Hope you and the seller can work something out. I know I'd be frigging irate if I payed full price for a fish in that kind of condition. Looked doomed from the day you got it in my opinion and something of that nature should have swam across the vendors mind when he bagged it.

Definitely seems like good vendors are getting to be fewer and fewer these days. :( Very sad.

Hopefully things will take a turn for the better in the future!!!
