AFAIK the location - the malabaricus is of course from southern India. But Jibran headbanger_jib headbanger_jib has written of some discernible differences before between an khudree and an khudree malabaricus.
Khudree originally is from Maharashtra, which was hybridised by the govt and later introduced widely as source of food in the rivers, so now the hybrid khudree us found in Maharashtra, karnataka and Kerala.

Tor Malabaricus is from kerala

What’s the differences from this one and the malabaricus
Khudree has smaller scales, the headshape is pointy.
Malabaricus has visibly larger scales, hence the lateral line scale count is less, the fins get reddish during monsoon. Else they are dark coloured.

Here are a few pics that would help

Tor khudree, this is the wild form and not the hybrid

When did you get a 25k tank? Fiberglass like your two 4,000g?
I've been building it on and off for a year or longer. Rubber liner. 45'x4' acrylic window. 50'x15'x5'.

Here is a relevant excerpt from YouTube comments on the mahseer ID. Perhaps, or probably(?) it is the douronensis?

Antzzom Lee
The mahseer is tor douronesis, aka gold rose mahseer or thai gold mahseer

Fish Story Aquarium & Rescue
Much appreciate your comment. The species ID of this fish has been an enigma to me for 2-3 years but you know what? You may be just right! I have recently acquired a small Tor douronensis, about 5", and the resemblance is strong. Of course, this guy is now much bigger, about 1.5', so time will show more, I hope, as the little guy grows.

(from this video where the mahseer is not the focus but it is present in the video and mentioned in the narration by me)

I've never kept any kind of catfish before, that's crazy they can get that big of a fish into their belly, wow. At 8:05 I thought he was going to gulp your GoPro lol.

So, I will roll for now with the

- Tor douronensis
- aka Semah mahseer,
- aka gold rose mahseer,
- aka thai gold mahseer

ID, many thanks to Antzom Lee from Youtube, and as I mentioned above we got a small one from Rapps in Jan 2019 at about 3". It is currently, after 5 months, about 6". A typical mahseer, smart and greedy, it has been residing in a 240 gal carp growout tank until about 10" when it should go into a 25,000 gal and join its alleged brother (and all other mahseer and carp), the bigger of the original pair. The smaller one has vanished in the 4500 gal at some point without a trace a while ago, I only noted this after a long delay; I should not have taken such a risk and pity on the smaller one in transferring it from 240 to 4500 at a foot long or so.

Anyhow, look for this fish in the following video update:

In Jan 2019, we got our first one from Wes, of course, at roughly 4". Today, 5 months later it is around 7". Easy carp, as all mahseer showing intellect and appetite to match. Has been in a 240 gal grow out with all other smaller carp / cyprinids. Hope to upgrade to 25,000 gal at 10"-12".

Look for this fish with a black lateral stripe (depends on mood, light, bottom color, etc.) in the following video. Don't confuse with a N. benasi whose stripe is not straight and who is not as tall bodied.

The Wes' sinensis is roughly 8"-9" now. We got another one at 13" from shookONES shookONES , which too has a dark lateral stripe but appears to have a slightly different, less tall body shape... this kind of difference can be seen in that last video in the OP I linked with three sinensis, one or two have more of a hump below the dorsal fin while others are more cigar-shaped... or maybe I am imagining it.

Anyhow, this video is (in part) about the Wes' specimen (sorry, unedited for only tor-relevant content). The one from ShookONES is to follow later.

The small douronensis from Rapps can be see in this video. It was moved to another 240 gal, a minnow tank. No big changes to report. Probably round 7". Slow.
