Good strikers should be the ones it doesn't work on. Granted I was never on his level, but we were taught to step into any spin move since you see them coming. It's like kicking above your waist (which our teacher would sweep us for ever doing while sparing), it usually only works when they are already dazed. A step back or in defeated those spin moves (not just saying this about my very inferior level, watched my Master do it on his level too).
Though I will admit it takes a lot of training to step into something like that, since it is a counter to your natural reaction. Probably why he drilled us on it so much. (In the video, you saw him step into a huge overhand thrown by his opponent, and the short jab + opponents momentum was all it took to drop the guy.)
That's what I meant about strikers that give him distance to do these things. I kickboxed myself for a number of years, but you'd never see me attempting tornado kicks and such. He's been fighting good strikers for years, so he's probably well aware of what he can get away with. You see Pettis pull off some crazy stuff that shouldn't work; the reason that it does work is because of the speed he has over his opponents. You'd think with the spins, a simple front kick would just knock him off balance, but it's easier said than done.
I just checked his Wiki page, and he begun Kungfu at 3 and competed in his first Karate tournament at 5. His speed and timing is amazing for such a young guy. He's still getting better too.
So Bottles how do you think Page would have fared in that Muay Thai vs Kickboxer clip you posted?
That Thai fighter Changpuek Kiatsongrit, is a legend.
Those Kickboxing titles he won were in Freestyle Karate tournaments, so I'm sure that he's fought a number of MT guys. Most of the MMA guys in the UK fight with a MT style (Dan Hardy, Paul Daley), so he's probably seen a lot of what they have to offer, but they haven't seen what he can do. You can watch tape and see holes, but exploiting them in a fight is not easy if you don't have adequate training partners to prepare with.
I honestly don't think that he can compete with the best MT fighters, but in another few years, he may be able to.
