It happens to all bullies...

From day one hrp Mongo has been the apex aggressor in the 125. High energy, manic and hyper. Well something happened...he's been hiding the last couple of days.

First things first. 2 days ago I did a 50% w/c on the 125. Immediately 4 of the hrps had one or two white capped eyes. Added epsom salt, about 2 cups. Mongo had an eye that looked rough, the silver one. Slade had a white eye. Bumper had two. Shade had a white eye...I'm like wtf.

Moving forward, everyone's eyes look normal now. Not sure what happened except I think in Mongo's case he ran into somebody. But he's still hiding. So I put the flashlight on...he came out and swam around. His top lip looks like a prizefighter that went 15 rounds. Top fin and tail tattered. Never ever seen him like this. Guilty party/parties unknown. However, bad brother Slade still struts the tank with swole up nuchal hump. Just sayin'.

Have to say I see early results of the pothos. Water in all the tanks is ice clear. Fry eat the detritus off the roots helping to keep them clean then hang out there and under the leaves. The thick mat of algae on the back wall is breaking up.

Couple of updates.

Hrp Mongo is back to being his hyper and foul tempered self. His mouth isn't completely healed but it must feel well enough to pick fights with. He was mixing it up with sons Bubba, Shade and Mote (all at the same time).

Hrp Brutus (out of Speck/Slade) looks to have monster potential and may be the first supersized pink marble. He eats like no tomorrow and appears to be a bit bigger/thicker than both Mongo and Slade now. Brother Squiggy is likewise picking up size rapidly. Stay tuned.

The rest of the pothos arrived the other day. The lime pothos I put in the 225. Those are from a small plant (4" pot) but it will be interesting to see how fast it grows with the ultimate 'fertilizer'. Of course Bp Boss and Brick had to inspect it closely.

The large 12" pot was a huge disappointment. I got a half dried, crispy plant with wilted, brown spotted leaves and POUNDS of roots. The damn thing was so rootbound there was no soil in the pot! The seller just sprinkled a thin layer on top. It's like the seller had an old leftover plant that hadn't been watered or repotted in months and just bagged and boxed it up. I've already given a 1 star review. I soaked the roots in a 6 gallon bucket overnight (they filled the bucket)!

After soaking overnight some of the leaves look a lot better but I'll still have to trim leaves , chop the roots and see what I can salvage. Some of them are thick as a pencil and girdle the pot. Amazon is reimbursing me since there was no way to contact the seller. These are the pictures in my review. Damn stupid and no quality control. This mess from a nursery?

The pothos can stand on its roots. Second pic shows the root bottom.

It took 45 minutes, a hammer, chisel and pair of scissors but I finally hacked out those pothos roots. That entire ball was just roots, not connected to the plants at all! I trimmed spots off of leaves and managed to salvage about 40%. Rest is trash. I'll be conditioning the pieces in epsom salt and ammonia (magnesium is good for pothos) and pothos actually feeds on ammonia first, then nitrate.

This tells me that plant was like that for several months at least. Rambo nursery needs to quit. Hopefully my review is processed today. They're lucky they got one star since none isn't possible. Mickey mouse joint.

I have an oscar from Mars.

Now ocellatus is known for being plant destructive. But what about being plant constructive? In the past Brick has placed things where he wants them and no matter how many times I change something he moves it back. He's also planted things on occasion. Well now he's outdone himself. I had an old raggedy plant I temporarily put at the front of his pit. Two days later it hadn't been moved so I knew he liked the location (when he doesn't like something he moves it immediately). Fast forward to this morning. Brick divided the plant by tearing off a section and planted the second piece...so now he's got 2 plants there instead of one!!

I had nothing to do with this...Brick ripped off a whole section, replanted it and has already pulled it up again...this oscar is something else.

More pothos pics coming soon!
