Need ideas for large peaceful fish- that stay peaceful

Thanks for the link,...yeah, I'm finding a lot of articles about these fish and how personable they are. I'll be checking out the Severums too.

But still, I have to wonder how much of this "playfulness" might equate to predatory behavior, like a cat would play like that fish was.

My biggest worry is making a mistake and putting another fish in the tank that I have to remove, which would be a serious chore. I guess I can put them in a 140 first with a sampling of smaller fish and see what they do.

I second the pearsei. Mine is a beast, (size wise about 30cm)
He is very peaceful, owner responsive and look awesome.

Chocolate cichlids, severums are great too. There are a few decent sized peaceful new world cichlids to choose from.

I really would not classify their behavior as predatory or cat like playing. They are cichlids and have their dislikes and likes. In the video the Pearsei just did not like the algae magnet for whatever reason.

I have introduced many small cichlids as tankmates over the past few years and had no real issue. Then I added the new regani to the tank and it was a cichlid bigger than others I had put in there in the past and the Pearsei went after that poor fish and established its dominance. After a few hours all was well and they get along fine. Even though its a peaceful fish it still is a cichlid so you never know. But overall I think they are one of the most peaceful BIG fish you will find out there.

I have Denisen Barbs in my planted tank and love them. I don't know that they're "Big" fish, but they grow to about 6", and their colors get even more vibrant the bigger they get. They have very small mouths and typically aren't aggressive. Mine have shown to be really hardy also, and Petsmart sells them for $7.62 now.

I've never had issues with my fire eel going after small tank mates. He's pushing 2.5 feet and doesn't even look at zebra danios, rummynose tetras or panda corys. He would chase a red tail shark that was in there, but only because he liked to hang out in the eels tube.

Severums, jewel cichlid, rainbow cichlid, a single male convict could all work, theyre not the biggest but would work well

Cool, thanks for the suggestions! That barb looks cool, but they're expensive. 40 bucks per is way too much when I would need at least 20 of them. But they are neat looking. I checked Petsmart page and I'm not showing them available.. but if I found them at a reasonable price I would jump on that.

I guess its time to take a gamble and try some of these bigger fish. I always thought having an eel would be cool too.

I think the tank has enough hiding places for the smaller fish to hide if they had to. It would suck if the cool tank-wide schooling behavior got disrupted though, but it might be worth the risk. My favorites are a giant school of about 50 green tiger barbs that patrol the tank non-stop. THey use the entire tank for their schooling which is really cool. I would hate to see them become timid.
