Need ideas for large peaceful fish- that stay peaceful

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Although pearsei (and their close cousin bocourti) are basically vegetarian, if a neon swims close enough, it will get sucked up. Both these species get over 14" and will eat all aquarium plants, and small fish.
These species are very opportunistic in their feeding strategy.
I feed my bocourti dandelions from the yard. No plants are safe, mine even ate 3ft papyrus plants and roots. Don't get me wrong, I think both are great fish to keep, but one should be realistic about what is thought of as a community fish.
These are great in large cichlid communities, but in what is thought of as a normal community??????
I also keep Paratilapia (they are not vegetarian), and will see most tetras or small fish as feeders.
Here's dandelion before bocourti, I also fed this when I had pearsei

dandelion after bocourti

papyrus before bocourti, after bocourti, the plant disappeared.

Discus's look cool, but they are expensive and I'm not keen on their high requirements. I would like to think that my water quality is good enough for them, but my instincts are to stay away from high requirement fish. Especially when they are expensive. I'll leave them to hardcore folks. maybe one day.

That's a good idea though, that's good use of your lawn refuse. I have a pretty good supply of dandelions too. I can just see my neighbors now thinking that I have a sudden interest in keeping up my lawn....LOL..nope, just gathering fish food.

Bad news....i got a reply back from Cichlid connection when I asked if he had an estimation when he might have new pearsei's available... he said he has no plans on continuing to breed these and some of the other large cichlids.

So now they're going to be even harder to get.

Joy! +1 to perseverance... found an outfit with 5 3in Pearsei's for sale on the opposite side of town. I'll probably be getting 2 or 3 of them this weekend.

These will be my first cichlids...kinda excited.

Once you start down the dark cichlid path.....

You will enjoy having a pearsei, very interactive fish.

tank raised discus are not that demanding as their wild counterparts . the can adapt to a little hardnest and a neutral ph .

yeah, you've been a bad influence DMD! (kidding) Actually, I can't wait, i'm driving to pick them up tonight.

That's good to know about the discus. But they're still too expensive for my taste. Beautiful fish though.

It took me a while to get mine. Bit of a story for you.

My first was a wild caught that I made the mistake of adding to an establish tank without first quarantining it. Learned my lesson, and lost almost my entire tank including this Pearsei.

I then ordered a batch that all came in with hole in the head and tattered fins that were never going to heal right.
The supplier made it right and sent me out this male as a replacement:

Tragedy struck when it broke a glass thermometer in the tank and cut itself up so bad it passed away.

I finally got my little Porkchop from a friend who was selling off a bit of extra stock. You can see little porkchop in the lower left.

So that is my long story of how my Pearsei came to be.
