So, just taken a ride over to one of my favourite stores which specialise in plecs but can be assured to have a number of oddballs and of course my favourite, cats. Since we lost the the wyckii, I was thinking of a character fish and they didn’t disappoint.
After a recent yearly cheap shop day they still had in four of these!

Down from £110 to £50, absolute bargain in my view. Jelly cat - Lophiosilurus apurensis (7”)
Apparently he is hand feeding but hard not to be in the small display tanks. Let’s see if we can train him in the six foot.
Had to stop myself from getting two!
And then what my wife considers a mad purchase. Well I’ve never kept one and thought it might be the last true monster I buy (probably cos it eats all the rest).

Apurensis! My favourite!

That one looks pretty lean, pretty slim and trim; not a good look on those guys. See if you can fatten him up a bit! :)

As far as hand-feeding goes, they pretty much train themselves. In fact, I defy you you to try and stop him...:)

Congratulations on those replacements for the black devil! I hope you enjoy them even more, you deserve it after a big crash.

So, the most recent pick up has been a different kind of cat.
My LFS have had some 4” synodontis soloni in for a while. Very thin looking I took two around six weeks ago and these have settled very well in my 580l display tank along with my 16 clown loach and 6 yo-yo loach, angels and Congo tetras and a few others.

These fattened up nicely so today I have exchanged 60 more common bristlenose plec juvies for the last three soloni.

What a beautiful looking elusive fish.

I now have a group of five so let’s see how they get on!

Those spots remind one of pictus catfish (or even Pimelodus maculatus).

Another awesome thread Fishman Dave Fishman Dave ! I love your taste in fish and fully enjoyed reading all your experiences. You really do have an enviable collection. Like that Jau, Wes/Rare Fish had some beauties awhile back and I was so tempted to buy one, but I don't have the room to house one properly. And I love your Apurensis. That Goonch too was a beauty. Seeing you lose that Goonch was heartbreaking, my condolences.

Loved seeing the Hemibagrus filamentus, probably biased though as my own Filamentus is one of my favorite fish. Mine is puppy dog compared to other Bagridae. Lives in a community and doesn't bother anyone except 2 Cranoglanis Multriradiata and a Xanthic Synodontis Nigrita. Ignores my Lithodoras Diorsalis, Platydoras sp. Maroni and my Trachycorystes. As a matter of fact he shares a very large pipe with the Maroni and Trachycorystes. Funny story I bought a Megalancistrus Parananus from Wes/Rare Fish and immediately upon introduction the Mega went straight to the pipe and started munching on algae on it. The Fila popped out looked at the Mega like he was thinking of attacking but went back inside the Pipe. Little did the Fila know that after his meal the Mega would push him out of the Pipe so he could rest his meal. The Fila popped out and started swimming back and forth furiously in front of one of the entrances. You could almost hear him thinking "who the heck is this guy? First, he eats my house then he kicks me out of it". The Fila dove back in several times but was unable to eject the Mega so he just stayed nearby slowly circling till the Mega eventually exited. Then he reclaimed his home. The Fila was originally in a tank with a Tachysurus Ussuriensis, dumb on my part. They're both Bagridae so it didn't work out. Luckily, I still have them both just in different tanks.

Lol, not even close...Kolt knows what he is talking about, i.e. nice little details like what species of fish he owns, etc.

I'm just a retiree bumbling around with nets and magnifying glasses, re-living the days of my mis-spent youth. :) I may have mentioned this in another thread: I owned my first apurensis Jelly Cat for about a decade, and then a couple more decades passed...before I even knew the name of the species...which I only learned by accidentally stumbling upon it in a thread here on MFK...possibly one of Kolt's...or yours! :)

koltsixx koltsixx researches his fish, observes and interprets what he is seeing, and then describes these observations in a very readable and entertaining style. This is "citizen science" at its best.

I just doze off in front of my tanks, wake up periodically and notice something, and then come on here shouting "Holy crap! Guess what I just saw!!!" :)

Thanks Viktor, you're making blush. :) Lol

Thanks jjohnwm jjohnwm but a good story teller isn't all facts it's also the ability to entertain and garner reader interest and you got me beat there. Even your response here made me laugh. Maybe because I can associate with bumbling around and a mis-spent youth. Or that I can totally feel the whole falling asleep in front of my tanks and suddenly noticing something new in a "Holy crap" moment. People like you and Viktor and many others are what I love about MFK. Reading interesting and entertaining posts all while learning something new or being able to relate to those experiences. :)
