New project, will take a long time

The pond is still looking crap, I'm having to clear the strainer on vortex one almost hourly of the dead bits of blanket weed etc. Until the pond balance stuff finishes doing the trick I've just got live with it.

As I'm planning to be bored for a while I've started writing up an article on the whole thing, I think I can get it down to 4-5 pages for peeps that don't want to read the whole thing. I don't think I've posted this before and I remember the wife taking ages to get the right shot:

great pic!!:headbang2

I can see the bottom again, cleaned the filters again yesterday and the green blanket sludge seems to be getting less and less.

I also picked up a huge bag of wheat germ pellets, I seem to be buying everything in bulk so it will last until I find work.

good to hear the pond is clearing again...I usually feed wheatgerm in the winter and a higher protein diet in the summer for growth...What do you feed the sturgeon?

Well the tancho has been raised only on wheat germ and big Kelvin loves it as well. Both these fishes are growing nicely on it as are the medium ghosts. I'm also feeding a high protein pellet along side this that again I got in bulk a few months back but the pellets are quite large for the smaller fish but the big guys eat these as well.

I went to see Nigel for the food and was very tempted by a dark tancho showa, luckily for me it was sold.

The Sturgeon are being fed on NT labs medikoi sturgeon pellets. The idea is you feed the koi until they are full and add the pellets for the sturgeon to feed on as the koi will eat them. IMO it's a total con as the sturgeon come up and eat the koi pellets sometimes.

At this time of year it's pointless anyway as the koi eat all morning until the sun hits them pond then chill out in the sun.

I was out last night karting and when I got back Mrs Y said they were going mad once the sun went off it. The sun is just off the pond now and after another hot day they are going mad feeding. Normally the medium ghosts are first to everything but since this warm spell it's big K and tabatha(the tancho), they've turned in to aquatic vacum cleaners.

I have also noticed at a certain temp (approx 69-70f) all hell breaks loose at feeding time...Mine have even been seen flashing and breaking the surface with whole body jumps...at first it scared the crap out of me, because I didn't expect it.
I hear you on the aquatic vacs, Ive seen them hit plum tree blossoms that float down to the pond...:D

When I was around at Nigel's place before he was constantly feeding the ponds, being indoors they water is warmer and none of the fish would stop eating, it's the same at dusk here. I was inspecting the injured sturgeon when it came up and a huge clump of food went passed followed by Kelvin who hoovered the lot right next to me, they are certainly getting more friendly.

Are yours still in the swimming pool?

What happened to the pool? Fish should be loving the weather with the bakki shower etc?
