New project, will take a long time

Flies are not really an issue in the pond, any that are there to hatch are very quickly eaten, in the day any that drop off the trees behind are the same. When there is no food going in you can watch the fish sitting in one corner waiting.

There are a few problems with the filters, not necessarily with the water although they do try to lay them there, more around the hole the filters are set in. That has become a haven for all sorts of insects.

That's cool. I guess its all a matter of upkeep then. A neighbor I used to live close to had a pond and it was like living next to a malaria farm. He neglegted his though. But the frogs, toads and turtles appreciated his lack of effort as there was a population explosion of all of them.

Not looking forward to the frog/toad return next year, this year the pond was hardly finished and they setup home in the underground pipes to spawn, I'm guess word has got out to the amphibious community and next year will be hell. I've got strainers on each filter intake as some of the sturgeon sometimes decide to get into the pipes and try to go through. The fish are too small but it's a pain, I was fishing out frogs/toads all last year from the SC

Can you just accomodate the frogs and toads? Just keep them out of key area's of the system. Depending on your latitude, you can get a pretty cool sounding cacophony from them and they eat all sorts of pests.

Your pond, if its the only conducive body of water around, can help seed their populations for many miles around with the little hipity-hopities.

I was purposely not cleaning out my gutter drain-tiles for years because they kept a population of tree frogs going in my neighborhood. Unfortunetly, they're gone now. I guess they didn't survive a particularly hot summer a few years ago and they have never came back. Kinda sad.

The problem is when the system was switched on(although the pond was full for 6 months) back in April/May that was the spawning season for the frogs and they all when in the bottom drain to breed/spawn. System was switched on and they all ended up in the filters spawn and all.

Personally, a lot of koi keepers are a bit snobbish about frogs/toad but I'm not bothered by them but when they come back and spawn again, the filters will catch them and the fish will end up eating the tadpoles.

There are plenty of other water sources around for some reason they seem to like my garden. They also spawn in the old pond as well but that is likely to go next year.

I don't think you can be finished with a pond. lol

I started with a 3300g pond and thought that was good, then dug it to 4800g, now I'm thinking, "I have a 30'x65' yard, why not a 25'x15'x5' deep pond?"

lol

I think the op is the same and it just takes a little money and alot of wife convincing to happen.

How about this idea; have the expansion butt up against your home's foundation. Then have a large viewing window installed. Have both your cool yard pond and an in home aquarium (of a sort) to watch.

the local frogs/toads know 5-star accommodations when they see them...;)
Even if I spend all my time trying to get the out of the filters

Agreed but you can stabilize it

Good luck if you get the nod from the wife.

I've seen that done with a raised pond viewing window in the side of the house, I'm sure it will come to me where and I'll post a link.

It's starting to sound like a pond owner and a boat owner have some of the same things in common. (The two happiest days in a boat owners life are the day they buy there boat and the day they sell it!)

Starting to sound like the best thing to do with Yanbbrox pond and oh so great filtration is - fill them both in and take up a sport or something, lol.
