I do not know if you have this already but you should get an mV (ORP) controller to optimize your denitrator system. This mV controller monitors your redox-oxidation potential.

The ideal range for a denitrator is -50 and -250 mV. If it exceeds -50 mV, the denitrification reaction may stop at the nitrite stage! If it falls below -300 mV, all the nitrate is reduced. The bacteria then start to use sulphate. This is a very undesired process because the end product of this reaction is Hydrogensulfide

If the redox potential exceeds -50 mV or even gets positive, the dosage of food can be increased or the flow rate decreased. If the redox potential sinks below -300 mV, the feeding can be reduced or the flow rate increased.

running at full capacity yet?

pros and cons yet?
mostly good........ i am adding a mechanical mixer to keep the k1 media clean..........I think it will then be able to sustain the tank at about 10 ppm nitrate ( 2.5 nitrate-nitrogen)

i have a hand held orp meter........might consider auto control down the road :)

Isn't this monster setup sort of the same concept as the Aquaripure Denitrator (www.aquaripure.com)? The only difference I can think of with the setup is that the monster version has an automatic feeder and the Aquaripure doesn't.

So will the Aquaripure work?

I was thinking of getting one for my piranha tank. I am tired of doing 2 water changes a week. I want to cut down my water changes to every other week with the Aquaripure.

aquamedic uses solid food ( deni balls) my system uses kaldness k1 media and is feed a liquid carbon food

yup you should definitely get auto control that hooks up to solenoid valves so you can control your flow rates :headbang2
i think i would leave the flow rates alone and just change the amount of carbon food..........:)

:iagree:.

On another subject, have you had any blackouts lately?

Sorry to dig up an old thread.... but what is the current status of this project? What are the current results a few months down the road?

Any updates???

the filter worked great for several months and ultimately the media plugged with dead bacteria cells.

doing more research i found the units should be mechanically stirred to prevent this........i have built a three prop stirring setup for each tank... soon to be installed...........
