Oh my God! TJ looks like my Phebe! How old?
TJ is less than 2 years old. Full collar, big head. Very affectionate and comical. He's so precious.

By the way, is it the whiter(shinier or brighter, whatever) of the two you rescued?
No, it was the darker one that jumped. The whiter one, which is the friendlier and the one with a much bigger appetite is still in the pond.

 hahahahahaha...

I really need to do more research on rays before I take the plunge. My pond doesn't have sand, but gravel and stones, doesn't seem to be ideal.

My nitrates are usually in the 20-40ppm levels, don't know if Rays would thrive in those levels.

I officially hate my PACU. I moved him to the pond as a trial. He bit:

1. One of the barbels of the silver.
2. Chewed up the fins of the ID Sharks.
3. Roughed up the Giant Gourami.
4. Electrical cord of the pumps

I moved it back to the tank and forgot that I just put in newly bought powerheads without protection for the electical cord and this morning, I saw the electrical cord of the new powerheads all chewed up. I touched it underwater and it burned my finger!

oh, and did I mention...I HATE Pacus! As in I detest them! I hope all the PACUs in the world die!

I'm gonna gouge out its eyes and drop him into a pail of heavily chlorinated water, then I will slice him up and remove all its scales and tape him up so he can't move! I swear, I'm gonna go postal on this Pacu! I'm gonna youtube the video of my torture and elicit all those nasty PETA comments :naughty:
Hey, " oh, and did I mention...I HATE Pacus! As in I detest them! I hope all the PACUs in the world die!" you either love'm or hate'm thats how it goes btw I added a new pacu to my pack, already bit me, but whatever.
But go for the ray you don't need to have substrate to have them, as you've seen people put them in bare tanks with nothing they'll be fine with out substrate, for my experience with salt water rays, I find rays alot easy to keep than the larger catfish. It's true, don't eat as much, don't grow as fast, the only thing is that tail you have to watchout for other than that it's pretty easy, I find'em easy as anyother basic fish.

First, I need to convince my wife that I'm NOT going to get stung. She has been supportive of my hobby and asked me not to get rays for fear of getting stung. (Her girlfriend's hubby got stung). If I get stung, my wife will kill me and the future of my aquatic hobby might be heavily compromised. ;)

Second, my parameters are "okay" not the best, although my ammonia and nitrites are 0 or thereabouts, I'm worried about my nitrates which are around 20-40ppm. I am not sure if rays will thrive.

Incidentally, as I have been WC a lot more often now, I've noticed that dirt, scum and poop really get to hide in substrate and crevices, as I have taken out all rocks, broken clay pots, petrified wood, huge round stones etc, my water seems to be a lot clearer. I will continue to take out some of the substrate and will look at a minimalist pond. The principle being, the more decor, the dirtier the water.

Oh, and to all those asking me why I didn't eat my aro--I'm aghast :WHOA: You guys should be ashamed of yourselves, what kind of uncivilized folks would eat their pet fish? :screwy:
