hello, just wondering how many times should i feed my 6" rtc a week, at the moment i am feeding him everyday with shrimp
Sounds good, just don't overfeed or he might give you back some half digested shrimp the following day. Better just to feed them enough so that their bellies are plump, but not ball shaped. Sometimes I know it can't be helped if housed with multiple fish and the rtc has a more ravenous diet. I've expirienced that before myself.

Is the tiger shovelnose (Phseudoplatystoma fasciatum) an active fish during the day or is the lima the only active TSN?
And is the
Phseudoplatystoma fasciatum a fish that eats from the and like the RTC?

Ok guys, here's the deal...about 2 weeks ago, i purchased a red tailed catfish.. he has a 15 gal. tank....he had gill curl one side, he didn't eat, and wasn't very active..now, he still has gill curl, already started eating but stopped 2 days ago and hasn't eaten again, and started hiding in a jar that i placed but doesn't come out even at night and there are no lights..I asked for help in my last thread and so far these are the things i have done,...I change about 10% of my water once a week, i siphon any feces that i see, and i've added a water plant to help cycle the tank,..the water in the tank is clean and clear although i don't know my water params because i don't have a water test kit..I doubt i will obtain one cause my dad won't buy one..it costs 900php(20$)..which might not seem much to you guys but very pricey for my dad i guess...everyone please help in answering my questions...will the aquatic plant help cycle the tank?? is ok to not own a test kit as long as i keep the water clean and change water frequently??how frequent may i ask will be ideal??i saw some water treating solutions and whatnot for sale at the pet store, do these help cycle the tank??and when you change water do you add any solutions like anti-chlorine or aquaruim salt??our tap water has chlorine so i add anti-chlorine to the water i use for changing...and also advice, opinions, and criticism are all encouraged..many thanks everyone!!!!!

Try for 50% in this small tank, with this hue bioload.> i siphon any feces that i see, <RTCs don't have solid feces... is a liquid... so you need to clean the gravel well whether or not you see waste.> and i've added a water plant to help cycle the tank <Not going to do anything here.>,..the water in the tank is clean and clear although i don't know my water params because i don't have a water test kit.. <It's not clean if it's not cycled. It's toxic and it's causing him to be miserable.>I doubt i will obtain one cause my dad won't buy one..it costs 900php(20$)..which might not seem much to you guys but very pricey for my dad i guess... <How does he feel about the two or three grand, at minimum, it's going to cost to house this fish? The huge electric bills that come with moving 10,000 gallons of water per hour? The food bills? This is a mistake. Please return the fish.> everyone please help in answering my questions...will the aquatic plant help cycle the tank?? <No.> is ok to not own a test kit as long as i keep the water clean and change water frequently?? <No.> how frequent may i ask will be ideal?? <It won't matter in a month... will never be clean due to the large bioload in a tiny, tiny system. And the fish will probably be dead.> i saw some water treating solutions and whatnot for sale at the pet store, do these help cycle the tank?? <No.> and when you change water do you add any solutions like anti-chlorine or aquaruim salt?? <Always use dechlorinator, don't worry about salt. This fish has problems salt won't fix.> our tap water has chlorine so i add anti-chlorine to the water i use for changing...and also advice, opinions, and criticism are all encouraged..many thanks everyone!!!!!
Please have a heart and return this fish. It's selfish and cruel to keep him. It's very easy to spend five or six thousand dollars just trying to keep an RTC the right way. If your dad won't spring for a test kit, I doubt he'll pay out for anything else the fish needs. Sorry to be so blunt, but I absolutely hate to see these great fish in these situations. Please research before buying in the future.

I'd check to see how much it's going to cost to heat a pond to 78 degrees in Illinois year-round before I'd put him in it. It's great that you have a plan, but remember that these are tropical fish, and if you don't keep them in warm water, they'll begin to get sick more and more and you won't know why. That's why my pond is indoors -- we figured out that running the pumps, at 12,000 gallons per hour, would already add forty dollars to our electric bill monthly, and even in Virginia, heating an outdoor pond would not be cost-effective. Even when you add in the cost to run a dehumidifier twenty-four hours a day in the pond room, it's nowhere close to trying to heat water to tropical temps year-round, or the huge amount of air pumps to provide aeration which would be needed in the summer, when temps get hot. Warm water holds less oxygen, and catfish are more susceptible to oxygen deprivation, because they inhabit the bottom of the pond, instead of the top, where oxygen transfer is taking place. Just some things to think about.

Good to know! Last I checked, RTC's don't do well when you try to make them wear sweaters... they're surprisingly picky about clothing. All Guido will wear are those weird wrestler's trunks. LOL in any case, that info goes for the other guy, too.... I am a fount of knowledge when it comes to housing these fish, and if anyone needs extra help, feel free to PM me.
