I plan on putting the filter socks front to back, just didn't know how to show it in the picture. Also reduced that one down to 8" wide. I'm afraid to put the divider as high as the other one becaues I don't want the water to go across it, I want it to have to go down the drip plate. At 17" it is only 3" from the top of the tank already.
You can leave the drip plate where it is and just raise that wall. All it will do is make the filter sock area deeper. and the water will still go through the drip plate.

I kinda thought you may have been showing the filter socks that way.

Ahh, gotcha. Makes pretty good sense.

i would put the filter pad before the scrubbies so now crap gets in your bio

There is one before the drip plate.

IMO if you are trying to filter a 300g tank with a 55g sump you need as much of a bio area as possible. That is if you are going to stock that 300 monster style anyway. This is what I would do.
usually you would aim for a sump that is 1/3 of the tank volume. In this case you are 1/6th so you need double everything to make it work as good as possible. again just my opinion

Dumb question: what role does the filter sock play? I'm setting up a smaller sump and hadn't considered those yet.

I was just going to have the input pour into the bottom of the first chamber, rise through a big block of foam, then spill over into the scrubbies. Hadn't thought of using foam after that point too. Is there an advantage to using the sock over my idea?

The filter sock will pick up a lot of the small and large particles before they have a chance to get any further. Once it gets dirty just swap it out with another one and throw the dirty one in the washer. I won't have to buy the foam filters nearly as often.

So basically it's just space-efficient mechanical filtration. If it's really fine, I would guess not much could get through, meaning you wouldn't need much foam. But on the other hand a messy tank could mean that gets clogged up almost every day. I like the idea of having reusable bags though.

no need to throw away filter socks.. just rinse them out and you are good... stuffing some extra scrubbies in this area is a wonderful way of keeping extra cycled media on hand which takes a lot of stress out of having to set up qtanks/hospital tanks

the bubble trap wall (where you have foam) is a GREAT place for filterfloss/polishing pads..
and dont forget you can stash your heaters under the egg crate

looks good post more pics :)
