Sump design, how does it look?

The tank is tempered glass and says on it not to drill any of the panels.

The sides are tempered too? In that case, I will default to someone smarter than me.

You probably could do it... just be sure that you prime the pump. You'll probably need to pour water into the return line so that the impeller submerged in water.

not sure if I explained that properly, but that pump should not run dry.

I plan to put a "t" at the top of the line with a place to add water so I can prime the pump. I also plan to put a check valve at the bottom of the line on the sump side to amke sure that it does not lose syphon and have to run dry.

Here's the sticker on the bottom of the tank.

Here is a link to their site showing which panels on which tanks are tempered. The 55 is their only tank that all panels are tempered.

That's wierd. I would be hesitant to plumb the pump the way your describing. It will probably work, but I can only guess that it would be more stress on the pump and probably effect flow rate.

drilling the sump is the best way to go, but in your case... I'm just not sure. good luck with it. keep us posted on how it works.

Not sure about the Darts but the Dolphins I am told have delicate seals. Even the slightest running dry can ruin a seal.

This is a predicament. Had no idea the sump couldn't be drilled. If you are stuck with the tank and can't return it this might pose a problem.

Don't know if anyone has ever tried it but My thoughts would be to have a piece of glass cut for a divider. Have a hole drilled in the divider. Seal the divider in the tank and put a bulkhead in the divider. Then you have a dry chamber in the sump for the pump to sit in, and it will NEVER loose prime. No risk whatsoever to the shaft seal, this is of course assuming they are sensative like the Dolphins, IF I am even being informed correctly about the Dolphin sseals......

I would pass your idea by the manufacturer, see what they think. I really think the divider is the solution though.

I apologize if you feel I lead you astray. I'm sure in the long run you will be VERY happy with the pump though.

I imagine that the shop I bought the tank from will let me return it and order a 75 for Thursday. They have sold out of 75's so they don't have any in stock. I will call them tomorrow to find out. Luckily I have not ordered any of the glass for my baffles yet. The only problem is that I do not know the inside width of a Perfecto 75 gallon tank. :(

I could go to PetSmart and get the 75 but I prefer to give the money to the shop I bought the 55 from. They have been very good to me for a long time. For me it is worth the wait to support a good shop.

I also called one of the other lfs's and they told me they could drill the tank for $45 a hole. I think it would be much easier to just order the bit from glass-holes. What size / how many bulkheads am I going to need for this setup?

Unless I'm missing something you should only need one hole in it..... For the pump. Should be for a 1.5 inch bulkhead IF I remember correctly. Whatever the pump is.

A second hole might not be a bad idea. I personally would have at least one extra for a drain.... Makes cleaning a lot easier. Definetly NOT necessary though.

a 75 should allow you to do 4 socks if you want to cut down on sock changes. Should also allow for significantly more bio.

Know of any place to get sock mounts cheap? I hate to spend over $100 for sock mounts. This tank is costing me a good bit of money so I would like to save some where I can.

Oh yeah, I did a quick search, looks like the input on the pump is 2". I'm a little worried about doing a hole for a 2" bulkhead my first time, that is why I was thinking that two 1.5's might be better.
