The Dreaded Aurnati Fungus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was doing some reading about the water chemistry found in and around the area these fish come from. I found it interesting that this type of water mold affects the fish in the winter more than any other time of year. I wanted see if I could find any info on the difference in water chemistry between the seasons. The attached article bears out what I suspected, the Ph. and alkalinity drop in the winter creating an environment conducive to the proliferation of these molds. I’ll leave up to you guys to interpret this as it relates to the way you keep these fish in the future, however I found the correlation between the mold and fluctuations in water chemistry interesting. I hope you find some of this helpful.

Good read! and it only makes sense, the fungus is going to thrive in the season when the water is most suitable, just happens to be the same time of year most are caught.

I didn't know the winter is when they are collected and it's all making more sense now. The capture, handling and transport of fish thet may be carrying the fungus which their immune system may be otherwise be able to handle is overwhelmed and they come in infected. This combined with the acid conditions (I'm assuming) they are kept in and bang! Understanding these factures will help dealing with this in the future and it will not be the death sentence it was once thought to be. I if all turns out well with bottle’s fish we should write all this up as a sticky including treatment to help others with this in the future. If you and bottles would be interested in helping me put something together I would be happy to work on it with you guys.

Keep it up Bottles.
With Aquanero´s help you´ll beat this fungus

Thanks. I certainly hope so.

Thanks for the link. That provides some good insight and I wasn't aware of the freshwater dolphins in India.

I would be happy to help out with a sticky on this subject.

I only gave one bath yesterday. He came out looking quite pale, so I just let him rest. He went into a corner and hung out in my floating plants.
I gave him another bath today and had the same results; pale coloring and hanging out at the surface. I'll see how he's looking this evening and then decide if I'll give him another bath or not. I'm not sure if this coloring and behavior is just a result of being moved in and out of the tank, or if it's a result of the Meth Blue itself. The fuzz is still present, but does seem to be improving slowly.
I'm still continuing the 80% dosage of Triple Sulfa and 50% dosage of MG (Maracide).

I would think it's more the results of being moved than the MB. After the next WC or tomorrow go 100% on the 3X & 75% on the MG if you're comfortable with it. I think you have the water at the point where they can handle it. If you bump up the meds skip a day on the MB bath as to not over stress the fish.

Slow progression is what I expected to see we started at a low dosage. It is the MG that is the main fungicide the 3x is a buffer and secondary bacterial preventative (once the fungus is killed the exposed sore must be protected and that’s where the 3X earns its money) and you are fighting a stubborn out break. What is the temperature of the tank?

Temperature is still at 75F. I don't want to go any higher since they should really be around 68F right now. I'll up the dosage of the Triple Sulfa and MG tomorrow.

He's not looking too good. The anal fin is pretty much gone and it is eating away at his body.

sorry to hear this, bottles :-(
even aside from the fungus, his general body condition isn't looking so good.

How do the others look? this one lokks bad, almost as if somthingelse is going on with it. Have they been treated for IPs? looks as if somthing's suppressing his immune system.
