Very nice post. But what is the best type of pellet to give them? Any specific brand or type?
really depends theres no real best but a good way to find a good quality pellet is to look at the ingredients (look at the first 6 or 7 of them) if most of them seem like they are something that would come from something that a fish would actualy eat (like fish meal, krill meal, stuff like that) then that's a good sign of a quality pellet.

Personally I like hikari massivore but look into other brands as well and decide for yourself

I cannot deny that pellets are atleast 20X as expensive as an equivalent amount of fish fillet or shrimp but for such a concentrated nuitrient package they are worth it. (although if you are feeding them only pellets all the time your probably going to force yourself into bankruptcy lol)

Thanks for the info. I got them Hikari Cichlid Gold floating pellets. They can smell where it is but for some reason they dont want to go all the way up at the top.

Hey guys I'm new to the site and have a quick question for ya, I currently have 3 rbp's on a cycling diet of cod fillets, shrimp (currently i feed shell on but i've heard mixed results for this), and earthworms. I live in iowa and I'm an avid sport fishermen :) kind of ironic I know, my question to you is would it be beneficial to feed my p's some of the scraps from my freshly caught fish? As in some flesh, or maybe the liver or heart or eggs? It seems like it should have lots of nutrional value to me but I thought I'd get your opnion. Oh its probably worth mentioning that the fish i catch would be either bass, panfish, catfish, so on and so forth (anything you can pull from a freshwater lake)!
Appreciate your time!

i was thinking about this too as i go fishing alot at my cottage during the summer and i thought fish guts (and such) would be great for them. it should be fine. but you may want to freeze it first to kill any parasites. as long as the lake is fairly clean (chemically) then it's fine

Organs have the most nuitritional value of any part of the fish and predatory fish should never be deprived of atleast some once in a while.

the only thing I would caution you about is that if there are any parasites then they'll be in the entrails.
Indeed. which is why i sugested freezing them first in hopes of killing any parasites.

Excellent post i have been raising RBP for years and have been fortunate enough to always have them eat pellets or some type of dry foods. my rbp favorite food now a days are sticks which they gobble up no problem

Just read this thread end to end and I have to thank everyone here for the valuable information.

I will most definatly have to look into breeding the ubiquitous convict cichlid.
These pellets seem like a good plan for me too. I love the MFK community so much!

Mods i recently discovered that market shrimp contain high concentrations of thiaminase. Is there anyway we could edit the post to recommend against feeding market shrimp?
