@ Redbellyrhen

great to hear my friend keep using the garlic trick for a while until the piranhas arn't as scared and then slowly phase it out

@ Greez

it wasen't my idea several people on here have stated the benefits of pellets (Diogenes being one of them) most of the others posted in threads a long time ago and not in this one.

Oh my god the garlic trick worked!!!!!!!!!! I have little wussies tho, they were AFRAID of the pellets at first and hid on the darker side of the tank then they got a good sniff of the garlic and it took them a while but they started munchin them like crazy! :headbang2my usually more docile one Freddy just went crazy and kept stealing them from Jason! It was ADORABLE!!!!! thanks so much for the help!
Zander deserves more credit than I do, but THANK YOU for being interested enough in humane fishkeeping to ask questions and research what's best for the fish. Piranhas are like the pitbulls of the aquarium hobby. They're awesome pets and terribly misunderstood, and like pits a lot of people keep them for the wrong reasons. If the regulars on this board can make a positive difference in the way that piranhas are kept then it's all worth it.

Stuck in the box again.
Thank you so much for the information! You have made me feeel like a bad piranha mom and I swear I'll change

What about crickets, nightcrawlers, native wild fish and/or wild snails? I have 5 6-8 inch piranha so the idea of bloodworms or feeder guppies just makes me scowl. The wild fish/snail idea ive had arguments with people on introducing diseases but I'm only holding my feeder goldfish (I'll stop!! Don't hurt meee) for a week before feeding them as is anyway.

The first month of owning these guys has been a major learning curve.

Pellets are good but your fish won't get everything it needs from them.varity is the best I believe!piranha eat whatever they can in the wild. Dead, alive, sick, n injured.they know where n when the baby birds fall/pushed out of nests.I feed pellets but also feed. Crickets, grasshoppers, worms, leaches, fish, shrimp, crawfish, beefheart n lots more. Your fish will live on pellets but isn't a rounded diet.fish pellets are like parrot pellets or dog or cat food they'll keep em alive but lacking in some areas!how boring n dreadful is life eating the same thing everyday.your fish will be healthier n happier with some varity in their life

I couldn't disagree more. i think that if there's one food that is well rounded for your fish it's a premium pellet. Other foods would be more lacking in some nutrition areas which requires variety. I'm not saying variety is bad by any means, even if your using pellets, but if there's one food that provides a more total nutrient package than any other it's a good pellet.

Very nice post. But what is the best type of pellet to give them? Any specific brand or type?
