Definition of a Chitty day … this is part 1 of my 500g filtration and plumbing redo… 55gal full of bio balls swapped out for k1 moving bed/bio reactor i had on my old 300 ray tank. This k1 has been in a tub with water for 2 years … the bacteria did not live lol… ive been putting off removing these bio balls for years now. Theres just enough room to fit my arm in . 1 handfull at a time of 10 years worth of straight chit … if it wernt for auto drips this system would have failed many many years ago. Shes done now atleast … if anyone in the tri state area needs bio balls come and get em lol…

No more love for bio balls lol

Compared to k1 in a sump, no lol… there fine in a wet dry. I still have 3 other systems with them. Im up to 2 55gal drums chaulk full now unused

Lol, I just started a thread in DIY detailing my jaundiced view of both Bioballs and K1...and then I revisited this thread and saw you blissfully unaware of the error of your ways!

Lol yes… i regretted dumping these bio balls in 10 yrs ago and have been staring at them in discontent ever since . They have their place. I have a nice overhead wet dry with them on the other side of the room that works great. The weight of the BB compared to my knock off k1 is a huge difference tho. I also enjoy that it floats so i can now just siphon out this bio chamber as needed so its no longer a chit/nitrate factory.

Cleaned glass for the 1st time in 3 yrs on this 500… tried to fancy it up a bit with a custom black trash bag bkg also …substrate change is next on the list before another round of filter/pipe changes on its other sump. Finished up the new grow out rack of 40b’s as well. Letting them cycle before i turn the drips on.

Wow...I love those backgrounds in the first two pics! Are those black trash bags? Are they different than in the later pics, or is it just a difference in lighting? They look terrific.

Damn....I thought I had the world's largest rohani barb! I have one loner that mixes it up in my stock tank, solid 6-7", but yours is a true monster rohani lol. Seems they don't need a group like so many people insist, thrive when they're odd man out.

I put those bags up just for u John lol… i did actually change the lighting tho … had to try it on the bags, ive read u mention it many times on here. They static clung better than i expected.
