Whoa! That's a lot of electrical tape! I think I may try that next time when I get the chance. Problem is I'm usually the only one tying. Everybody else is too afraid. Lol.

Same here, I get the dirty job of holding the crab whilst someone else does the taping.

Do you get mudcrabs in Hawaii, I didn't realise there were that many mud flats over there? If not, what crabs are available?

Yup, we get mud crabs here. We call them Samoan crabs. We have flats that are mud to mud-sand mix and full sand flats. They can be found in most inshore areas from brackish to full salt and love mangrove areas. The big ones are found in brackish rivers, river mouths, and flats... the more muddy areas. Here's a couple I recently caught. Top pic around 4-5 lbs and bottom one 3-4 lbs. I think I might go set the traps tonight and see if I can't get a feed of muddies!

Good size! Those claws would have made a good feed. A lot of waterways here don't allow the use of traps, so I bought a 10 ft punt especially dedicated for crabbing. One guy stands on the front platform and standup paddle around with a powerful headtorch at night (best time when they crawl on flats after dark) spotlighting them, once a crab is spotted, guy at the back positions the boat for the front guy to net them with a scoop net. Very effective and much more fun than setting traps.

That is awesome!!! Man I would love to experience that (especially the feed and drinks after)! We do something similar called torching. We walk the flats. Some times setting baits tied to rocks before the sun goes down. Coming back to them after dark.
You Aussies are some great people. Some of the friendliest/funniest people I met in college and beyond.
