Why do you think that? Its his thread... ;) All he wanted was just pics of other gars? We (myself aswell) jacked it up...

Im sure you would'nt want me posting links to fish/threads... In the threads you started... I do think were all supposed to stay on topic.. And we surely failed at that.. Its a fact... There is no derailment allowed on this site.. Atlest thats what the Mods say...

Sorry Kevin, for the bs my bad.

The OP says this:

I recently picked up 2 florida gar from John and really like them a lot. They seem to be growing rather quickly and I was wondering how large they will get in captivity. Does anyone have a 2' plus florida gar in their home aquarium? List your largest FL gar and post up a pic if you can.

thanks

Emphasis mine in bold.

I don't consider discussion branching off of the original subject material to be "derailment". The OP deciding many pages in that he now only wants photos here is just not within his power to demand. He can simply report this thread to a mod or start a new one for photos in the media lounge.

This thread is full of good tips and facts that I never knew. I'd like to see more intelligent discussion here. A little debate is natural between people who are passionate about the same thing.

Anyways...

couldn't agree more, and well-said michael.

that being said, there is a new thread for those who want to post photos of "big" captive FL gars AND you're right, it should probably go in the media lounge since it's not an actual discussion thread--

thanks for the info!!!

I have no clue how to jump start it and get it to add more length. Iv upped my WC, and up'd food. also started stuffing pellets in the food. i dunno. hope something works.

oh and also i turned my heaters almost off. the room they live in are odd. the room gets hot in the summer colder in the winter. allows the gar tank temp to fluctuate almost 20 degrees throught the year. mid 80s down to mid 60s.

its interesting that its nearly sexually mature. Wonder how i could induce spawning. but thats a different topic for a different thread

Lep - there's really no way to jump start growth once they reach a certain point on their track. gars, like other fishes, will continue to grow throughout life, but it drastically slows down. it will continue to grow over the next many years, but just centimeters as you have already noted.

so far we know that maturity can be achieved faster with faster early stage growth in some species of gars, but the trigger is still quite elusive for actual spawning.--

jumpstart was really the right word. more of an attempt at adding some size.

DAMN SPAWNING TRIGGER!!!

If my florida is near sexual maturity all i need is a super bonsai mature gator of the oppisite sex:naughty:

Meh who am i kidding. everyone knows what hybrid im after(hint hint sol)

If your so tired? Why you bother posting? I mean you could have been changing water as you said..

Now you see why the drip is the ticket... Your water would be changing as you share them thoughts.. Are we learning yet?

If you read this thread real close.. You might gain the understanding how to raise some Gar... And you wont be banging your head anymore. :)

maybe your "opinions" on water quality measures are best suited for the general aquarium discussion or water quality section or the MFK suggestion box...

just my opinion, but maybe you should go spend time raising some gar and THEN come back to this thread as opposed to wasting space with senseless posts and inflammatory comments.

LEP -

yeah, the spawning trigger is the bottleneck for breeding many large predatory fishes. there are definitely some sound theories for gars, but i think most of us just lack the appropriate space and setup to do so (obviously we cheat and use hormones for our experiments).

would be great to find a mature bonzai gator gar female...unfortunately that fish would have to be about 10-12 years old, which is a difficult find in the hobby!--

There is nothing wrong with posting opinions.. You post yours i post mine.. We just see things different.. And as far as i can tell? We have the right to post were we want... No?

And to LEP, Yes ive kept Gar... Had them for a few years.. Cuban, Florida, Trop.. Is what ive had personally.. Not counting the hundreds we had in my dad's fish store. I've been around a few.. But i dont claim to be a "expert" i have plenty to learn..

But you cant post in the damn Gar section with out 20 robots slamming you.. I guess thats why i always stick to the photo lounge and b/s... I know what i know.. Because ive kept the fish.. And im not one to be affraid to stand up to the "little groups".. Sorry if you dont like it...
But there is MORE than just what these "experts" tell you... I know you choose to follow like robots.. Thats ya'lls call... It aint in this boy..

wow, you can learn a lot about gars from hundreds of FLG's moving through an LFS, that's for sure...wait, not FLG's, they are all alligator gars right?

also nice job using your opinion of everyone else being a robot...i would hope others in the forum generally realize by now you're just trolling through the gar forum and choose to ignore your silly statements.--
--solomon

EDIT: maybe you shouldn't post in the gar forum then...

OR if there's so much more to gar keeping than what we can share here (and there is plenty more i'm sure) maybe you can use your expertise to enlighten us...

So its not true? You guys are like a broken record... One says something and ten people come rushing in with the back up... It dont matter what i say... You know all there is to know.. Why would i even try... Its a waste of time.. Anyway, if ya'll wanna talk more PM me.. Im open.. No point in just crying back and fourth.

Trolling? Thats funny.. But i'll let it go. Its not worth it.
