That's a good point, I I hadn't considered the roots of HC being shorter... Most of what I've read about dirt tanks suggested to use the same thickness of dirt as a cap. So if I use one inch of dirt I should use one inch of whatever cap I use.

The issue with using a thinner cap comes up with the possibility of dirt getting into the water column. Which would result in a messy tank...

That is something I'll have to think about and experiment with...

^ yeah, personally i've always stuck to one substrate per tank, although did at one stage contemplate doing what you want to, except i was worried over time the two substrates would mix together...

Anyhow, i guess thats all part of the joy of doing a planted tank, lots of planning and problem solving with a touch of experimenting...

Here is a pic of a new fish i picked up last week, and although i know its an algae eater, i'm not sure what its actually called in English? so if any one knows, please enlighten me... i know its from somewhere in China if that helps?

Quick pic of the HC grow out area, as you can see, i literally tore out all the HC, and decided to replant it in hopes its grow more quickly, evenly and more deep rooted compared to before.

Thanks, im pretty happy the way its coming along so far, pretty much exceeded my expections...

But just for giggles, i've decided to stick 2 nails into my filter sponge to add some iron to the tank since i've heard it does wonders, not to mention i'm all for experimenting

Not a goby, it's a rare little fish called a panda loach collected from only two small streams in china, most likely endangered. I'd try to find more and attempt to breed them, I'm sure people in the US would love to get their hands on somr
