Why dont you add some Polypterus to the bottom?
 
any bottom feeding fish (or even middle to bottom feeders) are out I think.
the way the barbs eat, they will starve out most bottom feeders.

once my severum grows up in the other tank, I am not even sure how well he will do..

will have to see. the appetite on 5 barbs like this is incredible. I hope to upload a video at some point in the future..maybe when they get a little bigger..
 
Think you're right about any bottom feeders being out to be honest. I kept 2 tinfoils once and nothing on the bottom grew or ate, had to get rid!
 
yeah, I guess its a sacrifice. I have been keeping fish for almost 20 years now (I am only 31 lol) and I have had tinfoils almost all the time. but I have never had more than 2 in one tank.

in the past, I have been able to keep many other fish with a set of 2 barbs without major feeding issues.

but with 5, its a different story. I raise the tank lid, put the food in. by the time I have walked over to my shelf to put the food can down and put the lid on most of it is gone when I walk back over to the tank LOL.

and I feed them a fair bit.

but its a sacrifice.

having 5 barbs in a proper school like this looks stunning in the tank.
