What do u mean people throwing them in from above? Do u mean somebody literally took a cichlid they didn't want all the way to the zoo and just go and put in in there???

Yes - the "jungle" area is above the fish area... people set their unwanted pets free.

Look there's doubt on the size of that male dovii what sharptoothbass is telling is 100% right this fish is a minimum of 30" but maybe larger, I personally talk the caretaker of the exhibit he said he know that they aren't amazon fish but there's nothing he could do about it, he just wish who ever put them there would have use fish native to the amazon, now that being said not to implicate me cuz I had nothing to do with it, from a source I here the fish was brung in as fry in a big cup of sort an was pour in almost all the amozon exhibit even when u frist walk in at the sting ray tank also. But that 30"+ male is one hella of a dovii.

I would like to see a tape measure on those Dovii. I visited there in April and thought the big ones were around the 24" mark, but it is so hard to tell without an absolute reference.

So people would come to the zoo with their unwanted pets and just drop them into the tank? I'm suprised a zoo keeper didn't catch them.
I too have heard that the dovii were introduced to the tank from outside sources. There used to be some big midevils in the tank as well.
I was at the zoo on Sunday and it is hard to get a good read on the biggest male, but I would estimate somewhere around the 20-24 inch mark. It was amazing to see two things in such a large tank - 1, the multiple females protecting a swarm of fry (at least 3 that I could see and probably a some in the overflows as well) in a tank that has 6 foot aripimas and a school of huge pacu and the relative aggression between the multiple dovii. Even in a 13,000 tank, there was a definite dominant male and the others, including the females, looked a little on the ragged side from what I can only assume is aggression.
