96 x 30 x 24 Tank and Arowana Species

I would like to hear your experience if you don't mind. To hear the other side would be very beneficial.

I have kept aro with SD and did not see any issues. The fighting is mostly among the SD themselves

Young aro are more skittish but it's almost the same with all young fishes. They will stable down as they get more comfortable with you and the tank

Aro is really not much difference in care from other fishes except the price and may be very stubborn converting to other foods

That being said, each aro has their own temperament, some do better in a comm tank and some alone.

Example, my gar and aro get along very well though both are top dewellers

Fyi my tank is 30 inch tall

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Do the SD's go mid or lower level when in your tank? I've seen some videos where the Silver Dollars are at the bottom and some where they are mid. I'm guessing this is up to size and that they prefer mid?

And do you think 24" is high enough for an Asian Aro Comm?

Honestly Zugs.
When it comes to incompatible tankmates, in this case the Dollars and Arowana, its best just not to bother working around the 50 different problems listed, the extra 50 that crop up later and everything else. Just pick whichever fish you like more and work with that. I'd suggest the silver dollars and ditch the complicated and volatile Arowana.

Theres a good reason why the Discus in my PFP isn't in my tank right now, despite having the money and space to hold them. To give a clue, its almost an identical reason to what I said above.

Mid.

Everyone has different perceptions of what is high enough but I have seen asian arowana comm tank in 24" height tank

Thank you for your input. This is what I have seen too. That's why I had wondered why people said no way to 24". Just wondered the reasoning behind it. But as you said, it looks like it is all based on individual opinion.

I think it would be better to term it as not idea rather than can't be done

I'm sure you have, but the question is does OP want to follow general Asian practices (which you are referring to) or general Western practices? -- as we all know there are often quite big differences between the two when it comes to stocking levels and appropriate tank size.

OP lives in a Western country...but up to him which approach he will take, as he has to deal with consequences either way.

What would be an appropriate height then for Western Practices? 30"? 40"?

Zugs go get your 300 and ignore the noise about it being harder to maintain than a 75. Thats just nonsense

Theres probably some truth to all the different opinions on this the thread even though some have never kept these fish nor have they kept 300 gals... which really isnt that large of a fish tank lol

Bio load will dictate how hard a tank is to maintain. More fish = more work tank size is irrelevant

As far as stocking there will always be one or two fish that dont follow along with our plans, its just the nature of the hobby. That said i know 2 people that keep the dreaded jardini in comm tanks and both do fine. One actually gets bullied by a silver aro. Just an example to show that not all fish follow the preconceived "rules"

If you wanna make your life easier id follow what backfrom the dead said about lining the tank with ac110's. They are much easier to maintain than canisters. If i were you i would spend some time in the filtration section learning about sumps. They are super easy to maintain if done right and are nowhere near as hard to set up as it may appear.

Good luck
