And so the new journey begins...

Thanks for the info guys, really appreciate the help and advise...

I think im going to have to do more research on these items see how they work and if i need them right away, since to be honest i never originally planned on going quite so high tech...

Yeah...neither did I, but it's definitely a different pace than keeping Monster fish, lol! It's pretty relaxing and enjoyable once you get your nutrient levels under control. Be prepare for a lot of Algae when you first start off. I thought that I needed more light so I would leave the lights on for 8-10 hours a day and eventually realized that 4 hours was fine, but even now I still have Algae, but that's only because I've been lazy about my 7g tank. The 20g is doing better, but I have 3 or 4 Otocinclus and a BN Pleco.

I remember something about algae possibly growing when using Co2...

So if i want to keep my lights on for longer, should i maybe have less Co2 pumped in the tank? Would that work in cutting down on algae growth?

The reason i ask is coz i have my lights on a timer, and i would prefer to leave the co2 on 24/7 so i dont forget to turn it on an off

Actually, it's the other way around...the more the CO2, the less algae. With your size tank, you can go 4-6 hours with CO2. That's what I did with the 7g and it was fine.

So in theory, if i wanted to say keep my lights on for say 10 hours a day, i should pump slightly more Co2 in to combat the algae?

But naturally will have to watch oxygen levels and PH levels carefully?

Yes, but from what I've experienced at this point is that you really don't need to keep the lights on for so long. You're good with just 6 hours at most.

Well i'll admit for me its just more the enjoyment of being able to view my tank for longer... Especially after a long day at work or if i decide to pick up my camera and start shooting...

So if i can keep my lights on longer, then honestly to me, all the better :)

But just to ask, is there any other downside to keeping your lights on longer than say 6 hours while running Co2 besides possible algae?

Not really, just a lot of trimming and maintenance...though, I have heard of some plants that don't do well with a lot of lights. I don't remember which plants, but I think your plants should be fine.

^ Thanks so much for your help Ben... you've been extremely helpful...

As for the trimming back etc, that i don't mind too much, since i have some pretty slow growing and small natured plants :)

Quick question again, when you initally setup the Co2 is is a good idea to set the bubble count lower and then build it up slowly? Or should you set it at the rate you plan to at the end?
