I found a book with some pics of an adult Gibbus, so I thought I'd scan them here...

what book is that? those don't look like adult gibbus to me, the first two looks like mac and the last one is a p. nattereri

lol I was thinking the same thing about the last pic, definitely a pygo but they listed as a gibbus. The only picture that is possibly a real gibbus is the first one. The other 2 the suthor must have got wrong. The name of the book is PIRANHAS KEEPING AND BREEDING THEM IN CAPTIVITY by Manolito Pinkguni 1998? (probably just someone out to make a buck but didn't know much).

the first picture and the second one are most likely the same fish just taken at different time so the tail fin had healed up already. they both have the same chimple and the setup in the tanks are very similar.

I think the first one is real, the last one is not. Gibbus change forms a lot as they grow, but the tail curving and body turning is signature of that fish. I'm not saying other piranhas dont curve their bodies, but they are more stiff (less flexable) for some reason. My gibbus always bends its body and looks from the side at things, like the one in the pic and in this video...

the body shape may be similar but that one just more like a mac to me. and gibbus doesn't have golden color, they are like rhom, the older they get the darker the get.
as from looking from the side and bending, my rhoms do that too when they have to turn around in a small corner etc. I'll try to get a picture of my rhoms doing that.

They do have gold/yellow tinted bellys
