Average lifespan of a flowerhorn?

Ebjd are not hybrid they are simply a color morphe of the regular jack dempsey, the reason they are so weak is along with the blue gene they are also genetically weaker, Smaller and less aggressive than the regular ones.
Their lifespan depends on the quality and the care given to them, similar to a flowerhorn in that aspect ONLY.

damn.. is it coz they r hybrids?

Because most are not being bred outside of their gene pool, F1's (though generally not as good looking) will live considerably longer than inbred/linebred Fwhateverthef***downthelinenumber

Highly unlikely for a FH now a days to live past 3 years. Most die around the year and a half mark. I've noticed Kamfa's do a little better than RD's.. but the rule of thumb is, The nicer the fish looks, the more likely it is to die prematurely. Weak genetics, along with the crap people feed their FH's and it's no wonder they don't live very long.

Would lower protein and less feeding help keep them alive longer? Or it's inevitable?

I know some one who is trying to produce longer lived fh by breeding fh with pure species and breeding the resulting fry with unrelated fh. I havent seen the results yet though. The species hes using is nice looking, its a male RD that is 25% carpintis and a female JdFH hybrid that is surprisingly nice looking.

All this time I thought they lived for 10 years
