Breeding Journal - Heros sp. Atabapo (mouthbrooding severum) PIC LOAD!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Has it been all female carrying thus far? Someone on CRC reported the female and male switching off every 24 hours or so for H. severus. If these are strickly female mouthbrooders, then we most likely will see them established as a full species unto themselves.

Interesting point. From what I could tell, only the female is holding. The male is a lot more active and has his mouth half open/close like other sevs. Right after I moved the rock yesterday the male went to check on the eggs and tried to pick up some leftover white eggs with the gentle kissing motion, but the female quickly chased him away.

I've heard they are supposed to be biparental mouthbrooders too. Maybe they will start switching once the fry are free swimming. Or maybe the female is too protective and/or the male is a lazy bum :D

THANKS!! Really appreciate the kind words.

It's time for weekly WC....Will they be affected? I'd hate to mess things up at this stage...

Thanks Scubarod :)

A few pictures from last night:

Tried to take a picture of the 2-3 wrigglers that fell before I moved the rocks. Really hard to do...can you see them? ;)

This one was from a couple of nights ago, when the female was picking up ...note the empty egg shells (grayish):

The female is very very protective. Every time I get close she charges the glass, and put on the facial marking. Very dramatic color change in seconds:

The male is not doing much, but I guess he can be characterized as "supportive" :D
