Quick Question. How old are your SA Redtail Cats.?
I bought the 2 smaller ones at 1 1/2" to 2" in april of 2005 from The Tropical Fish Room in Brantford, Ontario (from Jerry Draper for $20 each). The smaller of the 2 is approx 36" and the larger is approx 40". They have not grown particularly fast.
The larger one was acquired in 2006 from Sheldon a customer of Jerry Draper's at approx 24" or so as a rescue favour. He has grown to between 42" and 45" (estimates of 3 friends who have been in the tank with him)
I once grew the biggest one I have ever grown from 2 1/2" in 1994 to 48" by 1999 and he maxed out at 54" (4 1/2 feet) in 2003 and weighed 90 lbs (40.9 kg) when he was measured after being killed by my Big Black Nasty (black shark). Morulius chrysophekadion.
That Phractocephalus hemioliopterus was purchased from Aquarium Services (Big Al's) on Dundas st in Mississauga, Ontario and was unusual in the habit of eating Plecos.
Interestingly my friend Jeff Mountjoy was over to my house today and caught the black shark out of his summer pond (19 feet by 8 feet) and placed him in his inside the house tank.
