Cheap plants, less nitrate! POTHOS

That's awesome, Gangster. With a little bit of training you could get it to climb the walls.

+1

And Congrats on over 1K posts! Great sticky thus far guys lets keep it up!

Cheap way to decrease nitrates and keep your fish healthy: http://monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=504763

Once i move the pothos into an overhead sump(one of these days), I will throw some hooks on the wall for the vines to climb.
Im sure they are well over 10ft long...well most of em. Some probably a little longer. Its like a jungle on top of my tank.

I love this thread ... actually managed to get through all 101 pages (took a few days or maybe more). I grew up with plants, always had plants when I was on my own ... then I met my wonderful wife and almost all my plants have died. So not only will this reduce my tanks nitrates but it'll finally bring back some foliage around my house. Anyhow needless to say I've joined the pothos bandwagon this past weekend. Went to Walmart and picked up 4 x 4.25" pothos plants (all they had) and a couple more tropicals .. no label on them but figured I'd grab them anyhow (cheap ... 7 plants at $2.50 ea.) ... thought I'd struck gold when I had found some kitchen sink scrub-brush holders with suction cups attached (noticed someone also found this around pages 30-40 I believe :) ) as I have to worry about aesthetic appearances on my 55G (livingroom center piece - my wife's the judge) and free floating roots wouldn't work just yet (maybe in time). So I'll share some pics .... but then I've a few questions I need clarity on, if anyone can chime in please.
A pic of when I first had everything planted in their containers ... didn't cut the roots on the pothos or the rest, just cleaned them up pretty good.

2 pothos per container for 2 of them, the other 2 containers had the other plants, one looks like a vine type (looked like crud at the store but no others there) a plant I've grown before that I hope will eventually bloom (if its the plant I'm thinking of ... wish I knew the name) and some kind of tree like looking plant.

This is what it looked like on Saturday evening when I put them in.
002_zps6ed7aa64.jpg
all was looking well, and the object is to have the plants cascade down to the half wall this tank is next to (kinda room divider) and hopefully the tree like plant can grow up and out to compliment the rest of the scene (ready to do tweeking when needed ... should it work out like I hope)

So then Monday when I came home from work I found both pothos containers on the bottom half spilled (white gravel in my tank bottom now) but the plants were mainly up top still, had them kinda leaning over the edge a bit and it held.
003_zps8c046133.jpg
The container with the vine and tree like plant hasn't budged. Figured it was probably the weight of the gravel (aesthetic purposes) that may have brought the pothos down so I emptied out half from each ... different story with the center container as my cross brace to my tank runs between the 2 tree like plants in it so waiting to see if it eventually falls. And I did trim the pothos roots this time as by now I was at pages 60 - 70 and understood the emphasis on it.

Tried taking a pic of the inside front side view ... water sprite kept spinning into view of the camera

Which now brings me to my questions ...
All of our tanks are currently semi-planted, My son and I have been using liquid CO2 and liquid ferts. Should we stop using them? Adjust how much we're using? Cease using them all together? Hoping someone has experience on the matter.
I'm hoping the current is sufficient, I've 2 AC70's running on either side of the plant containers. So the water normally just swirls at the middle of the tank.

My wife thinks things are growing already (I'm skeptical) but I'll admit the vine like plant in the center container sure looks better than it did at the store.

The plants will take off Mr. mom.
I noticed good lighting and some good circulation around the roots helps.
I would kill the co2 and have some airstones under your new soon to be roots.

Mr. Mom, you're gonna wanna keep your liquid fert and co2 regiment in order to keep your aquatic plants.

You might even need to add a bit more nitrate booster to the water.

If you have a powerhead, or wavemaker, I would put it aiming directly at the "planter holders". Not sure if you'll need a bubbler, but a strong current going right through the root area will help a lot.

Pothos will battle all of your other plants for nutrients, and will most likely win. I had half a dozen large amazon swords in my 125g with pothos in the HOB filters, and the amazon swords had a hard time keeping up with the nute hungry pothos.

Thanks for the response ... It's what I was wondering about. Any idea what signs I should look for should I need to add nitrate to the water. My tank isn't what one would call overstocked ... but it isn't empty either 3 Senegal Bichirs, 5 Thomasii Cichlids, 1 Synodontis Ocellifer, 1 Red tailed shark ... the plants are currently Bacopa, Wisteria, Ludwigia, Anubias, Cabomba and Watersprite for now.

Maybe I'm being greedy, but I want the best of all worlds for this particular tank, exterior plants cascading down backside (pothos and tropicals) I nice lay out of vegetation and driftwood (aquatic plants) and the rewards of cleaner water (pothos and all other plants). Through all the reading I did, lots was mentioned on the benefits of the pothos to fish and water parameters. Just curious other than your Swords Chris, has anyone else had any experience with planted tanks and pothos. Whether they be CO2 injected or not ... just curious to what degree a person may have had to adjust they ferts and such. Otherwise ...
I had put the fourth container on my 29G semi-planted
005_zps92df939e.jpg
They didn't have anymore pothos when I bought these plants last weekend ... but I know they have more this weekend and was planning on including pothos as well in another container.
Different sized tanks ... but could still give an insight. Just need to learn what signs to watch out for on nitrate depletion on the aquatic plants (I'm still a NOOB :) ) ... guess its back to reading stickies

Once again anyone have experience on this angle of Pothos ... please chime in. Thanks for the help so far.

Some of the terrestrial plants you have there aren't pothos, I see one plant.

+1 also they do out competing algae for nutrients!

All you have to do is test your water to make sure everything is in check! I have some pothos in one of my high tech co2 tanks and its fine!

Thanks F1 ... yes I've plants other than pothos .. the 55G has pothos on either side with the center one being other tropical, and the 29G, I'm adding pothos to it this weekend. Glad to hear you've had success with the combination on your high tech tank. Fills me with hope. In the mean time I've solved my dilemma of what to watch for on my plants ... so here's to happy growing.
