Cheap plants, less nitrate! POTHOS

Thanks F1 ... yes I've plants other than pothos .. the 55G has pothos on either side with the center one being other tropical, and the 29G, I'm adding pothos to it this weekend. Glad to hear you've had success with the combination on your high tech tank. Fills me with hope. In the mean time I've solved my dilemma of what to watch for on my plants ... so here's to happy growing.

Cheers to that and I have a few air powered algae scrubbers if your interested. They work great and even better they grow all the algae inside the unit so it doesn't grow in your tank and on your plants.

Great stuff! I am gonna be trying this out. I have a tank with a dozen mother Anubias and the water is always at 0 Nitrate! I want to do this over head Pothos for all my other tanks! The egg crate idea was very cool. Nice idea VET!

Just did this today. The only PIA part was rinsing off all the dirt from the root ball. I rinsed off the dirt in the kitchen sink with warmer water because the water out of the outdoor faucet is around 63degF, so I didn't want to shock the plant. The PIA part was trying not to get most of the soil down the drain. I would rinse and shake in a large plastic container, and once that got too dirty, I would dump that water into a 5gal bucket. When the 5gal got more than half filled, I took it outside and dumped the dirty water onto the lawn. Hoping to see good results for my efforts.

Wow looks great! And your efforts will surely pay off! You'll notice nitrate reduction around the 2-4 week.

Also with that design how are your roots exposed in that box? Maybe a front shot?

Again nice work!

The container has suction cups and is designed for showers/sinks. There are square cut-outs throughout the entire front side as well as 2 cut-outs on the bottom. I took a picture of the other side, but the cut-outs weren't visible. At some point I'm probably going to drill more holes throughout the entire container for maximum water flow.

Now I got it

Next weekend I'm going to drill a bunch more holes and throwing an airstone inside

Okay so I placed an order for a couple dozen pothos just the roots and got a great deal!

Anybody know any other plants that do this other than this Ivy?

Also can you submerge the actual leaves?

Will these Pothos harm my Anubias?

I throw some lights every day on the Anubias!

Looks good to me! Wherever the holes are the roots will grow out of! Air stones don't always help a lot but you can try pointing your filter output towards the roots.

This is absolutely awesome. I bought this Potho at my local super market for 5 dollars. O hope its the correct one. This idea is amazing! Vet you are a rock star!

Yes the plant at the top of your tank appears to be pothos aka devils ivy!

Okay so I placed an order for a couple dozen pothos just the roots and got a great deal!

Leaves will die if submerged! Only roots need to be in the water to suck up fish waste aka nitrate/ammonia! You may need to dose a tad bit more fertilizer. After the pothos are established (2-4 weeks) test your water for nitrates and for the next few weeks keep testing so you know how much it is dropping to solidify your water change schedule!

Cheers and updates are appreciated!

Duck weed seems to help a lot with nitrate reduction as well but nothing beats pothos pound for pound!
