Cheap plants, less nitrate! POTHOS

If you don't mind the purple appearance there are some great deals on LED grow lights on ebay. I bought one of each size of these, still testing them out. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-5x-E27-RE...32?pt=US_Hydroponics&var=&hash=item2326806d34

Pics of the 3 watt in use first pic is with flash on

1st off put a piece of tinfoil or aluminum foil on top the eggcrate where the light would shine in the tank cuz that spectrum of light is IDEAL for algae growth in aquariums! Make sure none of that light is entering the tank!

2nd that bulb may not be the best for vegetation, from the link:
Why there is Dual bands,tri-bands or 6 Bands? What is the difference?
More bands does not mean a better light. The light spectrum used in this Hydro LED contains the most efficient and proven wavelengths for flowering. For over 4 years, Lighthouse has refined the wavelengths of their LEDs. The 90W UV model has a majority of LEDs in the 660nm, 630nm range which is perfect for flowering. This light will work for VEG also, but if you are looking for a VEG/Clone light only then we would suggest the 90W HO (High Output) LED, which has a higher concentration of white LEDs.*

Like the idea, plz update us!

There are certainly better options but for the price I think these are worth a shot. So far they seem to be working fine on the pothos and carnivorous plants. Haven't noticed any difference with the pothos, growing nicely but it was also growing well with a CFL, but my cape sundew is growing like crazy and my VFTs look healthy. I don't want to upload a bunch of charts and such but the 445nm blue and 660nm red LEDs on these lights look pretty promising based on the photosynthetic action or chlorophyll absorption charts I've seen.

No new algae so far but if it becomes an issue I'll address it.

Need to clean the front acrylic so I can get a good root shot on here. That pothos was two tiny leaves with just a root nub a few months ago and now it's got roots growing into the tank from a few points on the vine, some easily reach the floor of the 24" tall tank.

Nice!

I didn't doubt the capability of those lights to grow pothos or house plants in general I was just worried about potential algae growth and you don't want light to hit the roots either.

•Very cool, I believe YOUR the 1st to be using crazy cool LED lighting on POTHOS (at least on this sticky)! Definitely keep us updated on growth and parameters!

Take a pic every few days and I'd test for nitrates every week just to see how fast this efficient way of lighting helps stimulate growth!

I gave in and pruned the roots.
The fish needed more room.

Some of the vines hang to the floor.

I liked the roots. It really doesn't take up room just looks that way, my fish swim right thru em. But check on parameters and let us know if you see extra growth or n03 reduction!

Your tank couldn't possibly look bad either way!

I toke my plants out the window because it's getting to cold and they where beginning to freeze so I pulled my pothos from their pot and decided to put them back in the tank since my hood is broken on side of the pieces of glass I cut it works perfect the glass has enough of a gap to put the plants in without the stems or leaves. Here's my roots now ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1385460899.214382.jpg

I would never known these plants were good for aquariums without this sticky. I will share some info in the changes in water conditions in about a week so you can log the improvement

Ok I just tested my water I had to use crappy test strips but I will be buying liquid tests later this week. This test came out with .20 ppm nitrates
