Cheap plants, less nitrate! POTHOS

I'm sure an expert will chime in here, but they will reduce nitrates, but they are slow growers so they wont make as large of an impact. Also, keep in mind that as leaves and whatnot die, if they fall into the water the put back much of what they absorbed. If you plan on adding regular pond plants they will help for sure, but if youre solely interested in filtration pothos are hard to beat

Sounds good. I have a fairly large pond that I can just drape the pothos over, how much do you think I need?

How much you got?

...Sounds awesome, do you have any tanks inside?...

Ya...

What about just regular pond plants? Lotus, water lilys or bog plants? Wouldn't they clean out nitrates as well?

Correct. The issue with those other plants is that they are such slow growers that the uptake of nitrate will probably not be adequate. You want emergent plants that grow very quickly.

I heard duck weed also does pretty well at absorbing nitrates. I think that would be great in a pond....

That might be true but Duckweed is a mess in ponds. It clogs everything in short order and is impossible to eradicate. Not really a desirable species. You definitely wouldn't want it in your tank.

I have ran into a minor issue with my 10 gallon pothos sump. The gravel has silted in about half way with waste. Because of this the new growth has a twisted burnt appearance. As a solution I am going to try a large airstone under the roots from now on.

Anyone have experience with the difference between HOB bound pothos versus free root pothos? Does the growth slow without the constant circulation from the HOB? Would I need to aim my two Maxi Jets at the roots when they are free hanging?

I'm looking to take my monster pothos out of the two Penguine 400's, and make a basket system on the back half of my 125g.

Thanks for any help.

Emergent plants will always grow better with their roots in flowing water. That is the principal of hydroponics. Fresh, oxygenated water always moving over the roots, carrying nutrients to the plant. For example, if you were just to put a pot of Pothos in water, the roots would rot and the plant would probably die. The need fresh, circulating water over the roots.

That may help, do you have a lite on them?

As long as the roots have current it really doesn't make a difference, maybe 2 holes of my spray bar hit the roots coming out the basket, otherwise it just sits on top the tank and growth has been tremendous!

Basket system imo works better especially when its planted with pea gravel, the roots intertwine within the gravel, the they grow out the basket holes like mine did, and a power head aimed at the basket is more the sufficient flow ime. Plus you cut down on power using an hob soley for the plant and the roots have tremendous room to grow

And 1 maxi jet is fine
