Cheap plants, less nitrate! POTHOS

As long as the roots have current it really doesn't make a difference, maybe 2 holes of my spray bar hit the roots coming out the basket, otherwise it just sits on top the tank and growth has been tremendous!

Basket system imo works better especially when its planted with pea gravel, the roots intertwine within the gravel, the they grow out the basket holes like mine did, and a power head aimed at the basket is more the sufficient flow ime. Plus you cut down on power using an hob soley for the plant and the roots have tremendous room to grow

And 1 maxi jet is fine

Thanks for the confirmation, F1 VET. I've been meaning to change up the HOB system I've got the pothos in, but wasnt certain if the constant circulation from the HOBs was better than allowing the roots to float freely. My wife thought I was nuts when I put the plants into the back filters, now she'll think I'm nuts to cut up an egg crate light diffuser to make baskets for the 4 monster pothos.

Ok, fast growing with lots of roots. I'm going to try Hyacinth and see if that helps. It's a high light plant so probably wouldn't be as adaptable as pothos.

Hyacinth, in my experience, like to drop a lot of debris everywhere in the tank/pond. They grow EXTREMELY quick and multiply rapidly in a pond. In a tank, it might work.

Are you putting it at the top? If so an eggcrate wont hold a basket with substrate if its anything as big as mine, i used metal shelving, you can buy sections of it from lhs, i just used a recip saw and cut a square dropped it in and its sturdy. It also makes a cool diy lid

Yea my gf thought the plant would die at first, but now its taking over the tank, my fish love the roots, with a amazon setup it just seems so natural, not that pothos are from the amazon but roots in water just look bad ass and give fry protection.

Plus you save energy cost on the hob, noise etc.

The whole point of my pothos thread was the simplistic ease of setting up a nitrate reducing plant as efficient/cheap as possible :-D

Yeah I was planning on setting it up on the top of the tank, but it'll only be half of the lid. Should be around 36" long (10" of which will be supported by glass bracing) and 10" wide. I had planned on putting four baskets (2 on each side), with clay balls as the substrate. I have a friend who works at a hydro shop, and can get that stuff pretty easy.

I'm really digging the root look on your tank, and I think my red hooks and spotted silver dollars would love to munch on them.

When I pay day rolls around, I'll grab the materials and see about posting some pics.

Do you think some plastic hooks, like the ones that hang over a door would give support to the eggcrate?

Thx man, i love the roots too!

My hydro basket with pea gravel prlly weighs 10-15lbs so idk if it will hold, the hook idea might, any pics of what u mean?

That's not good. So all the dead leaves and debris will end up adding nitrates...... maybe I'll just stick to pothos.

Good idea :-)

No pics just yet, it'll be about a week before I'll have any.

I might have to double up on the eggcrate, or maybe add some plastic supports! :nilly:

You may have that cheap metal shelving laying around?

I used some pencil cups that had the mesh on the sides.
