Cheap plants, less nitrate! POTHOS

Thanks F1!
Those t5's are the main reason the plants grow so much.
I have noticed the fish are a lot happier w/ the plants in there. It gives em a nice natural cover.

Same with my fish!

The ONLY and I do say only burden of pothos is trying to take decent pics, I guess since mine drape down the glass the fish use it as cover, piranhas being skiddish by nature love it but a little frustrating on picture day.....

I still haven't been able to track down Pothos here in NZ, but I did find a plant of Philodendron cordatum at the garden centre. A quick google told me it is possible to grow it with the roots submerged in aquarium, so I'm going to give it a go. Anyone tried it?

I've grown philodendron in water. They are very tolerant of low light, will grow in water, can be trimmed back easily and often, do not have special nutrient requirements and easily propagate.

The large wide leaves may be indicative of the ability to release nitrogen into the air (nitrogen volatilization) which could be a key way that pothos work.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot and see how it goes. Still on the hunt for Pothos though!

Does anyone keep them with herbivorous fish, particularly uaru? I'd love to have the Pothos growing in my tank, but I'm also on the hunt for some young uaru and I know they eat anything plant-based [including driftwood] so I'm a little concerned about the toxicity of the Pothos. I could just grow it in the sump, but do like the look of it in the main display...

Regardless of where you grow them only the roots are supposed to be submerged. Therefore you shouldn't worry about your fish eating the plant. Usually they leave roots alone.
