Tayloring would be a problem with my idea since once you drill the hole, you are committed. I think the air pocket would be a standard elongated heart shape or elongated balloon shape. Varying the flow will just elongate or shorten the airpocket. It will remain centered or along the circumference of the pipe. As long as you hit the air pocket at any location, I think the problem is solved.
I agree and from my tests with this my air pocket was along the circumference of the pipe and thats when I was really able to "tune" the siphon. This late at night is when I do my best DIY thinking but I cant convince my home depot to stay open 24hrs. Damn it!!:swear:

And if only Walmart would only handle a better line of DIY stuff. I am heading there right now actually. They have fire eels for three dollars. I am not crazy about fire eels (funny looking face) but at three bucks I can learn to love them. I am also looking into buying a closed down fish farm, so I better stock up on stock. Any excuse to buy fish. And you can't beat fish shopping at midnight (I am one hour ahead of you).

Hmmm, Ohio is on the same time as Florida. I was thinking you were from Minnessota. Must have been the person I was helping with bulkheads and drilling.

I want to do this for my 2 55 gal tanks ones a reef tank and the other is for my seahorses can someone tell me how to figure out what I need to find the right pump and pipe size to use. I understand how it all works but don't know how to figure out the flow rate I'll need. My seahores tank only needs a low flow rate the current can't be that strong.

use 1" and it will only flow what your pump can flow (up to 600gph)

after you get it primed, it will only flow what is returned to the tank.
