pacu mom that is truly impressive! Did your husband have to research much or is he in the plumbing trade??

My husband is a retired logger, now student finishing prerequisites to get a bachelor's degree in nursing. He is not a plumber. "Necessity is the mother of invention" was never more true, than in our case. He was determined to come up with a system that worked for us and our big boys. He spent a couple of weeks working on the plumbing, but first had to crawl under the house and shore up our wood floors with jacks and blocks. From this experience, I know that he can do anything he sets his mind on doing. I've already told him that if the pacu outgrow their tank, he's going to do a major tank build....he'll have to enclose and convert the patio into a solarium first!:)

Poor guy also had to build the stand, and came up with a lighting structure that looks good and hides all the plumbing...it's only right that he does the work, afterall, they're his fish:):):)

Pacu Mom, thank you for the poop sucker idea! :)

My tank is bare-bottomed too and since I've implemented this poop sucker thingie I've never had to vacuum the bottom. :)

Great! I'm glad to hear it's working for you too!

Yeah, it sure works wonderfully :)

By the way, I've been told to add substrate to make my walking catfish happy... not really keen on doing that... maintenance is so easy with a bare-bottom tank... and I kinda like the look of it...

Debris moves very easily and freely over a bare floor. If you can place your vacuum tip 1/4" from the sand and not pick up any sand but can move and suction up debris sitting a foot away, then it would work. Otherwise, you'd probably ruin a pump.

Nice setups, mine pales in comparison, both in tank size and filtration.

Filtration for my 270G:

I have bulkhead overflows with 1 1/4" reinforced braided tubes running to my Wet/Dry. I like the bulkhead overflows a lot better than the standard corner (box) overflows because they don't waste space in the tank and aesthetically, I think they look better. Mine are high enough so that they still pull water off the surface (so that I don't get that oily buildup) but also, more importantly they are high enough so that if the power goes out, my sump will not overflow.

I have a TruFlo 300 Wet/Dry with a Rio 3100 and 17HF pumping water back into the tank. I also have 2 XP3's loaded with filter floss (I use the XP3's mostly for mechanical filtration, but I keep a little biological media in them just for good measure).

Here you can see the bulkhead and the XP3 plumbing (I don't use the spray bars anymore...they were ugly, so I got rid of 'em).
