FISHING SEASON 2K10!!!!!!

Best worst day in a long time...

Went out 15miles in the Gulf yesterday to try and catch some red snapper before the season ends next weekend.

We caught live pinfish in the bay and on the way out saw tons of sardines which we loaded up the livewell with as well.

Once over the spot, the action wasnt fast but when we did get hits they were BIG. Using 6/0 reels with 50lb braid and 40lb fluro leaders absolutely could not slow the fish down! Hell, one of the crew even brought up an 8ft nurse shark on the tackle we were using but what ever we were getting would take us right down into the wreck. First assumptions were amberjack. However after a 15lb snapper and a 12lb snapper came up we knew it was just BIG snapper!

It was my wifes first time offshore fishing and of course she was getting most of the bites. At 105lbs at times I was afraid she was going over board when she got bit!

At the end of the day it was my first trip ever offshore without putting fish in the box. :( However, with all the big runs and plenty of cold beer it was a great day out on the Gulf of Mexico...fingers crossed for fair weather and calm seas for the last weekend of red snapper next weekend!
Why didnt you put any snapper in the box?

Everything kept breaking me off. If the drag was too loose, theyd take us into the wreck. Too tight, well the leader would break. I think if I had some heavier leader material in the 60-80lb range we would have done alot better too.

Also, surprisingly, the smaller fish just werent biting! I lost at least $30 in hooks and sinkers. Them damn half pound sinkers cost nearly $2 a pop!

How deep where you fishing to need half pounders? Also should have just thrown minnows for maybe kings i heard they thick offshore.

We were only in about 100ft of water. But we used heavier weights because we were drifting. In a drifting boat, lighter weights will trail more behind the boat and increase your chances of tangling up with other people on the boat. Plus we had several remora swimming around the boat and the heavier sinkers helped us get the bait down faster then the remora can swim!

We didnt want to fool with kings, but youre right we probably could have caught a few. After eating so much snapper, grouper, redfish, sheepshead and flounder this year, I cant seem to enjoy eating king anymore.

Your spoiled to hell with all those bottem fish. Need to get me some whiting and flounder next week. ALso are there any campgrounds you know around navarre?

I know of some RV camp sites. Other then that Im not sure. Why camp though? There are a couple of motels on 98 right at the bridge that you could probably get into really cheap this time of year.

Here are a few pics from the trip Sunday...look at how flat it was out there!
