Gar Identification - Post your Gar to be ID'd HERE!!

someone gave me this gar because it out grew there 30 gallon tank :screwy:. they said it was a florida. however someone at my lfs said it was a spotted. i believe its a florida because i catch a lot of spotted gar. sorry if the pics are back. i will upload more if necessary. btw his nose and fins are almost completely healed

Yes, that's a Florida gar.

it's a FLG. they have quite variable patterns...this is all stated throughout this thread and several others. yours (the one pictured) is a nice looking specimen.--

PS - mods, please rename this thread "post your Florida gar pics to be ID'd as a Florida gar but sometimes possibly an alligator gar" j/k. sort of.

I don't see why it's so hard for people to identify gars? There's only a few different kinds. Just look at the pictures and see which one looks like yours and that's it. It's not rocket science guys

there are only 7 species, you are right, but a few are definitely more difficult to ID than others...that being said, you're right, in most cases it's just a matter of reading the pinned topics and comparing the pics and you can narrow it down to ~2 species if not the one you have. it's been well-established that gars that look like "spotted" gars are nearly all Florida gars. beyond that and very small juveniles, it shouldn't be too difficult.
i think people are just getting lazy and posting in this thread before actually looking through the ID guides/sites (not in all cases, but in many many cases it seems) --
