GIANT gouramis

Ok so you agree, so that means we're more than half way finished. Like I said one of your filters most probably the external one isn't getting the bacteria load it used too. Either do to the motor/pump slowing down or something blocking the intake flow or there was just too much packed material in it this time or too much way of large pieces and it was clogged.

Canister is clear, just checked?

Did you check to see how slimy too the touch the inside wall of the canister was? Or if the impellar was cracked, chipped or warped or caked in muck? Also did you look at the tubing, was it kinked anywhere along it's length or pinched?

Doing a water change later, will inspect more throughly. The tubing is fine.

When was the last time you cleaned or rinsed the outside filter?

I'm not trying to hijack or anything, but since you guys are on the topic of filtration I was wondering.....What is everybody using to filter these crap factories? My tank is not drilled and I have a cascade 1500 and 2 Ac 110's. The tank is a 150. Stock is one 15 inch RTGG, 6" Oscar and 6x 5" Tinfoil barbs. I plan on upgrading in the next year or so, but wanted to get an opinion on filtration. It's almost like my filters are doing a good enough job. Or maybe I'm just starting to notice the huge **** coming from the G. I can't vaccuum the gravel enough to get **** particles gone. Thanks.

6-8 months or so? I just rinse the pads in there, I never touch the bio balls or ceramics unless there is a huge sludge build up.

No need to apologize this is a giant gourami discussion:)

Your most likely looking at a sump filter for your new tank, loads of designs on here just search 'sump design'. I am curious about your gravel vac, how come you can't get everything up?

I wish that I had sump on this tank! It's not that I can't vacuum everything, it just seems never ending. I usually do a 50-60% change once a week and maybe a smaller one in between if I see too many logs of crap. Perhaps I just haven't really taken into consideration how much crap he produces. His diet is pellets, roaches, lettuce, squash, bananas, grapes and the occasional chunk of turkey hot dog. I feed once a day 3 x's aweek and twice a day for 2 as much as they will eat in 5 minutes or so. Almost to spite me he usually craps a lot right when I'm finishing a water change. What an ******* he can be!

I've just re-read your earlier post, I think your GG is not an issue, I missed the oscar on the list, one of the messiest fish you can get.

Try changing the diet, go with harder fruit, banana for example is great but even while eating bits get missed and ends up in the gravel. Mango, apples etc. don't break down as quick and there is better chance to be eaten later.

Yanbbrox since when is Banana a hard fruit? And why would anyone even think of putting Mango in there tank that they complain isn't clean enough now. I'll agree with you Yanbbrox, that there needs to be a change in feeding habits, I just don't agree with what you wanna change it too. You wanna feed your RTGG Monkey Mix as a occasional treat thats one thing but, stick too leafy green stuff that won't break down in the tank and start rotting and causing problems as soon as it hits the water. You get all this cr@p in your filter and before you know it you have a compost pile going in it, with more trouble coming out of your filter than is going into it.
