GIANT gouramis

Hey All

I have just got myself another 4 x Grey Giant Gourami's at about 5cm in size, I am going to be growing them out in a 6x2x2 for awhile and then I want to move one or two into my 10ft tank with my existing Gold Gourami. I am going to have to look at changing what fish I have in the 10footer at the moment and down the track and will probably get/build another tank, As I do want to keep most of the fish I have now.

just a couple of questions for all

1/ How do people find two or more gouramis get on in a tank?
2/ Would I want to have two females or a male and female? As I am sure the Gold I have is female.

Cheers
Males fight and cause troubles between the females. Best to keep the separate.

Eheim is another brand that is excellent in it's own right. They are initially higher in cost, but they do last for years and years and years...There are a few models that are rated for similar capacity as the FX5.
It's like your basic "Chevy vs. Ford" scenario, just look and see what you prefer.
Both are more than enough for your proposed fish stocking level, but then again, if you spend much time here at MFK, this too will come to pass...;)

As far as Powerheads, my choice would have to be the Hydor "Koralia"

They are designed to move water efficiently and they do a great job. Gobs of water movement, without that narrow stream that diseupts the substrate...
You could get by with 2 x #2's , however,
2 x #3's would be even better circulation yet... along with the FX5, that would be a filtration system that will work great for a 240g and the bioload you are thinking about.

Substrate is kinda what you want to look at. My GG could care less what is on the bottom.
Sand, Gravel to Rocks, and everything inbetween has it's pros and cons. To me, barebottom is the easiest to clean but you gotta like the look.

Remember GG's need to pop up for air, so just make sure there is ample room above the waterline for him to poke his mouth out of the water...

Hope this gives you a bit to think about...~Zennz;)

is there a powerhead that actually blow out bubbles? idunno, seen them on youtube but dont know if they are powerheads.....

gonna go the lazy route, bare bottom.

the more i search, the more questions i have. i guess i have to make a thread in order to get some answers. going to due alittle more research first.

on that note, thanks zennz

You do realise that when you have that tank stocked you will look at it and go 'hmm looks a bit empty' and in no time at all it will 3 times as many fish in it? Least that's what happpened with me and my 180g. I've got an FX5 and a powerhead in mine and its more than adequate so should be fine for yours as well.

hello tsubakai. yeah, thats what i was thinking so i gonna get another fish once my tank is set up. i would only stock a hanfull at most, i want to give my fishies alot of room to swim around.

been reading about DIY sumps. i think i might try making one instead of buying an fx5.

While Eheim and like canister filters are all good filters, I myself prefer The Ocean Clear Canister, as it is just that a canister - no pump, the pump you use is up to you. So with this canister one can create a filtration system of there own design. Plus Ocean Clears also have several add-ons to the canister package, ranging from a built in U.V. and heater to 25 micron filtering, Poly Beads and more.

You'll end up regretting going BB after a while. I ran all my tanks BB when I was obsessed by discus, over time everything went back to gravel. Don't forget there is a lot of good bacteria living in there, and it'll take some pressure off your filters. Just MO

It's really up to you, if you think the tank/filters can handle it then the only real risk is if they don't get on.

Don't forget Master Tequila was almost driven insane with his;);)

i cant imagine doing a gravel vac on a 240g tank.

tequila had 4 GG and they were out to get him! i should have enough room for 2 GG. yeah, my only concern is that they wont get along.

I would run gravel in my tanks, a mate with a shop just went from gravel to no gravel and back to gravel in all his tanks. :screwy:

I'd agree with george the giant gourami that there is a lot of beneficial bacteria living in the gravel. :headbang2

Just use a gravel cleaner regularly when you do your water changes.
