i am a lazy :D less time on cleaning means more time to enjoy the fishies.

the other reason why i am deciding to go bare bottom, its easier for the fish to locate food that sink to the bottom.

YES!! ,
That would qualify you as LAZY...
and
You can make your Gourami LAZY too...it is good to have them forage for what they don't take at the top...it gives them something to do...;)

little known fact: GG's have been known to plot an overthrow of the household they reside if they have too much idle time...:naughty:

Actually from my experience, Bare Bottoms only make it easy to see all the crap that would normally be hidden in the substrate, and that makes for MORE work to keep it clean...Substrate can house benificial bacteria that can process some of the waste, and hide the rest till enough collects to warrant a gravel vac session...:D

a lazy gg is a big fat one!! :D

besides having a big fat lazy fish and owner. the only negative of having bare bottom is that a good filteration system is needed and it would work harder? i would rather clean a filter then gravel vac!

zennzzo, any recommendations on a sump pump? looking for a submergible pump with a 720 gph and up.

Has anyone made a sump out of a garbage bin?

G the GG,
It is awfully strange how much alike we think...

I too went bare bottom with a slightly oversize pump and a Extra LARGE sump with huge bio-chamber on my 225g...
as in 3600gph Reeflo DART pump, 90 gallon sump with 1,000 scrubbies.
1.5" returns and 2" dual overflows for plumbing...
At full tilt I can turn the tank water over 14 times per hour...guess what, I still had crap on the bottom that I had to vac out, and my returns are plumbed 1/4 the way up from the bottom...

I telling you this just in case you had the same idea I had, about not having to siphon the crap from the bottom, at all, ever...
I just knew I was done with that friggen hose and gravel vac POS that ALWAYS gets water where I don't want it, when I went off the hook with pump size and all. I even plumbed a hose fitting on the back of the tank at 1/3 down from the top to drain 33% for a waterchange. Like open a ball valve and outside the water went, period.
but noooooooOOOOOOOOooooooo, I still gotta vac jack the bottom...:screwy:;)

As far as pumps go...I like the QuietOne 4000 for a safe and sane flowrate, 1017gph at zero head, that should net you over 700 from sump to tank...~B

That sums on the argument FOR substrate perfectly

Great argument for substrate, ruined by the fact that you've set your tank up bare bottom:ROFL:;)

Heat problems.

The water changes are about a week overdue, so I did them and it seems like the temp in George's tank must be cooking him it's so hot. I've had a look at the heater and the dial for temp has broke so I've turned it off. As I'm still out of work rather than mess about with many mini heaters I'm going to set it up on a timer 30mins on, 30mins off and see how it goes.

Dude what is the average temp of your home? I don't think that George really needs that much in the way of heat, he's a big boy now. Plus I dought that your place is really the cold.

seems expensive but i will surely look into ocean clear canisters.

if you dont mind, can you post some pics of your sump. sounds like a beast!

i am currently running bb on my 55g tank with a fluval 405 and a hob, and it picks up all the poopies. no vac needed, just drain and fill with water.

quietone pumps or magdrive pumps?
