I think what would be most helpful is some chin shots of a australis and a malabaricus right next to eachother, like you have of the mala and lac on your website."

Sure!, That's what I suggested for some days...but I have the feeling that you will say; "both are malabaricus" ;)

"Otherwise, all signs point to mala. It's a very nice looking fish, don't get me wrong, but I think Felipe is wrong."

Would not be the first time...:D

"He still hasn't provided any specific information to back up his claim. "

So I spent hours with just writing a lot of bull****? :(

"The Jaw of this fish looks definitely more mala than lac, and if he says it would be somewhere inbetween the two but more lacerdae side, I'm not seeing it."

That's one of the differences between animals and we humans; it's not always what we see...it's what we want to see.

The Jaw of this fish looks definitely more mala than lac, and if he says it would be somewhere inbetween the two but more lacerdae side, I'm not seeing it. Others are welcome to judge for themselves too, does the chin shot of this fish (much better new shots by the way) look more like mala or lacerdae? I don't even see a somewhat resembelence to lacerdae. It's 100% mala to me.

I totally agree with KRSwop1. I think Felipe has to show any scientific evidence that can prove his words. I respect Felipe's more than 30years experience, but experience does not mean scientific evidence or scientific research IMO

Sure!, here is the link again...for the third time;
http://www.scielo.br/pdf/ni/v7n2/a01v7n2.pdf
(But...why would only I show "any scientific evidence"....what about the "scientific evidence" from the people who think this Hoplias is a malabaricus? ;) )

"I respect Felipe's more than 30years experience.."
Thank's a lot!!...I should hang my self if I have not learn anything after so many years of fieldwork :(

"...but experience does not mean scientific evidence or scientific research"
That's true...but it helps!:grinno:
IMO
I promise, as I said, pics of the 3 species.
I leave this sunday and will be back the 12/02, and I am sure that I can bring back some H.australis, H.lacerdae and H.malabaricus for pics.

No problem!, I receive 2 groups from USA in march...some of the guys can maybe bring one lacerdae for you?

(Then you can start a new thread with some pics and we all get something new to discuss...)

Yes, both get bigger., but lacerdae gets much bigger than australis.
Biggest lacerdae I have seen was 91cm., and 10,500 kilo (from Rio Negro, department of DURAZNO, central Uruguay)
And biggest australis was 56cm., and 5,400 kilo., from Laguna Pedrera in Bella Union, department of Artigas, north Uruguay.

Ok Felipe, hopefully you are able to get me a lacerdae.

I dont mean to nitpick, but you do MEAN.....10.5 kilograms for that 91 cm lacerdae and 5.4 kilograms for that 56 cm australis,..right?......thanks again.
