That helped, but a live example would help much more. Thats why I'm looking forward to your future post with pics.

I also just wanted to note that in the paper you provided, on p.120 it did in fact say that the dentiaries are parallel in australis, and not convergent like the one in the pics and malabaricus (comparing it to the figures a-c in the diagram on p.118).

"Medial margins of contralateral dentaries approximately parallel (Fig.1a-c)."

Correct..; "approximately" parallel

The lines of an australis never "tuch" each other (as malabaricus), but still not as parallel as lacerdae...as I said before; something between both species (malabaricus and lacerdae) but still more similar to the lacerdae.
I will be back the 12 or 13 with pics...you know..."a pic says more than...

Where the sun don't shine
I can now confirm that there are 5 pores along either side of the under jaw. The 5 on the left side are obvious, while there is a white blotch disguising the last pore on the right side...which was throwing me off.

5 pores on either side of under jaw along with the lateral line scale count (41) would point to Hoplias australis.....correct?

Does this rule out malabaricus? ...or can malabaricus exhibit these same characteristics?
